Most of my shots are short, I've used and liked both the .17 HMR with 17 grain V Max, and the .22 Mag. with 30 grain V Max. both kill with minimal pelt damage, but the .22 Mag. does it a little faster. For longer range the 53 or 55 grain V Max is a very good round depending on which you gun...
Kind a partial to the Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. But then most of the areas I hunt deer are wooded, and the shots for the most part are pretty short range, and need to be taken quickly. The lever action fits my needs very well.

Personally, I sort a like the S&W .460 Mag. with 5" Bbl. A little heavy but allows for use of 3 different rounds. Weight not bad when carried in a chest holster.
