7mm or 30 cal? Just for curiosity’s sake

My vote goes to the 30cal. Owned many calibers larger and smaller... the 30cal is one I always go back to. My rifle and caliber of choice is the Tikka T3 I bought. Stainless, heavy barrel and 300 WSM. I’m still perplexed as to how Tikka called it a varmint rifle.

    Short Barrel Mountain Rifle

yeah, a magnum short barrel has a nasty bark to it. I bought a Savage Alaskan brush in 338win mag and it's nasty. yeah, it's only a 20" barrel and light weight... but its a nasty noise maker. Accurate enough for bush hunting or if a person had to pack it in.

    which 223?

Not much remained of the coyote.... And the skunk, nothing but bits of flesh and fur floating through the air.

I never said it stopped me.

    which 223?

If you're looking at tikka, take a peek at the T3 stainless varmint. Comes as a heavy barrel. Myself, I have one in 300wsm and love it... though I still haven't found a varmint "needing" a 300wsm pill.

    Never use a SAFETY

I was taught these things when I was young... #1 loaded or unloaded... treat every firearm as if it was loaded. #2 The safety is to be placed in the fire position ONLY when ready to fire. #3 A safety is a man made device and should NEVER be trusted. Finally, muzzle control muzzle control...

Tikka T3 HB Varmint Stainless 7mmRM for Long Range?

On mine I used the Leupold bases and rings with no issues. Base Pt# 54447 About $28.00 Ring Pt# 49901 About $35.00 Now, the numbers are Leupolds numbers and are for a "Medium" set of rings and two piece bases that left me with about 3/16 of an inch clearance with my 40mm objective. If...

Tikka T3 HB Varmint Stainless 7mmRM for Long Range?

For your initial sighting in and break in, run of the mill Federal will do fine. Pick a nominal weight and go with that for a beginning. Once you feel the rifle is broke in (won't take long on the Tikka stainless barrel), then you can choose something fitting to your situation.

Tikka T3 HB Varmint Stainless 7mmRM for Long Range?

Actually, I'm in Arborg. As for distances, I'm shooting at 400 yds at the moment... still getting used to it. I do hope to get back to the 800 yd mark sometime in the future. Scope I'm using is a 6-24 40 Bushnell elite. For the price of it, it's ok...nothing spectacular though. In the future I...

Tikka T3 HB Varmint Stainless 7mmRM for Long Range?

Andrev! Great, another fellow Manitoban here! I too bought the Tikka T3 stainless varmint... only in 300 WSM. You're gonna LOVE it! We (as Canadians) are quite fortunate to get these rifles here in Canada as they are real "tack drivers"! gun) As for a longer barrel, well, this is where the HB...

    300wsm h4350 05 h4831

All the above powders "seem" to work well in the 300WSM. Myself, I have had great results using the H4350 and the 208 A-max... though it's of the coarse grain and you spoke of using the finer grain powders. Lately, with the powder supplies dwindling, I have been looking into other powders that...
