Went up Turkey Creek, trail is horrible with all the down trees and washout. Jumping a string of three pack horses over a bunch big logs and off 4 foot cuts makes for a long day. Spent two nights in the cabin. Last day was over Granny Mt then down the river to Box Canyon.
Made a 60 mile loop through that part of the wilderness in late January to see what was actually left in there. You'll be disappointed to know that there was no fresh sign of them left in any of their normal area.
My opinions on this are derived from 30 years and countless trips into the area. My last trip was in January. My only goal has been to keep the information as close to current/correct as possible.
This particular herd was in exceptional good condition. They had all the feed and water they...
I'd bet that The Center for Biological Diversity and PETA have the same donor class. PETA has not opposed this yet and it's been in the national news in two different years.
Doesn't take long to see who is running these
Organizations and who controls their agenda.
Before they started gathering and killing them last year, you could ride down the Gila River in that area and see 30-50 head any day. The reason for the lawsuit from the Center for Biological Diversity is because the cattle were over grazing the bottom of the river and bothering the hikers on...
The Forest Service put out a Decsion Letter for this cull shortly before the shooting began.
The information provided by the Forest Service was last year they paid $38K for the same crew to come in and they shot 64 head.
My guess is that the contract for this year was very similar.
Part of everyday life in the southwest. You don't pick up anything without banging on it first if it's been there for more than a day. I have killed as many as 6 on the front porch in one year. We had several cats to keep them rattling. My grandparents had Guinea hens but they make a ton of...
My concern is the $100K+ contract the FS could use more efficiently on the local forest.
There are trails that have not been cleaned in 30 years in the Gila.
90% of the cattle in the Gila Wilderness can be found on about 6 miles of the river which happens to be on the Continental Divide Trail. The cattle had over grazed that section of the river since the two prior monsoon seasons were pretty poor.
There were some old bulls in that stretch that...
The NM Cattle Growers lobbied againt the proposal for hunting them.
The NM Livestock Board opposed shooting them last year when they killed 67 from the air.
Bears ate well when they came out in the spring.
The Continental Trail runs through 15 miles of that section of the Gila River. The river...
