    Problems with new gun

I've been loading for a long time and thought I'd seen it ALL. Guess not! I built a long-range rifle for our local competition, "Long-Range Varmint Silhouette." We use life-size, steel-cutouts of squirrels, marmots, crows, jackrabbits, coyote, and bobcat, at extended ranges. The jack and coyote...

    Do you name your rifles?

When I was in high school, I decided to start "customizing" my rifle. I had bought a Model 17 Enfield .30/06. The first thing I did was take it to wood shop, and put a chunk of walnut on it. In high school? Maybe that will tell you how old I am, lol. Later, I did quite a bit to it. It now has...

    6.5 prc vs 264 wm

I have just gotten my .264 back and shot it a couple times with ELDs. It is a Savage with a Shilen 26" 1-7 twist, stainless barrel. I've some Sierra 150s and Vihtavouri 24N41, Norma 217, H870 and H1000 to try out. The belt doesn't harm anything as you should headspace on the shoulder, anyway. If...

    Need some guidance..

I just got my .264 WinMag going. It has a Shilen 26" 1-7 #3 barrel. I've already used SOME loads with 147 ELDs, and have some Sierra 150s ready to go as soon as the winds stop. The WM is a bit better with the larger capacity. Try using Norma 217, H870, Vihtavouri 24N41 and H1000, and see what...

    264 win mag throat question

I put a 26" Shilen with a 7" twist on a Savage 110 action to shoot a bit of competition, with long-range practice thrown in. We shoot iron Varmint animals at varying distances, squirrel at 200 meters, crow and chuck at 385 meters, and jackrabbit and coyote at 500 meters. They are life-size, and...

    Is This Excessive Pressure??

Actually, Rhovee, I do believe that the factory, SAAMI, is the practical max. For instance, some are loaded so that the highest round of a series is, ie, 65k. Others are loaded so the highest of a series is, ie, 45k. All of this would depend heavily on the actions that are built for that...

    Is This Excessive Pressure??

Fed 215s are a hard primer, like the CCI 250s, just a little hotter, in my experience. Of course, keep using the same primers as you change the load for accuracy. I always keep at least an extra K of each around to compare. Have fun, Gene

    portable shooting bench options?

I use a Caldwell StableTable (not the Lite) but it looks to me that the DOA would be almost as good. The DOA appears to be a bit more complex, not to mention, expensive. I got mine through Sportsman's Warehouse.

    Is This Excessive Pressure??

Primers are very inaccurate when trying determine pressures, especially when trying to compare different brands. I believe the ones you are using are CCI 250s, especially with as slow a powder, and as much, as you are using. 250s are a hard primer so hold up pretty well under pressure. Your...

CCI vs Remington primers for 300 win mag

I tend to agree with Backwoods, as I find RP 9 1/2s and 9 1/2Ms tend to be a little "softer" shooting. There are a lot of times when changing to the RPs that my velocities drop a bit...In other words, I MAY put 1.0-1.5 grains more powder in a .300Mag to bring the velocity up to where it was with...

    Any 270AI loads

I've got a .270AI in an FN Mauser with a 24" Douglas 10" twist, barrel, and a Timney adjusted to 26oz. The stock is a laminated thumbhole and it has a 15X Bushnell on right now, but when I take it hunting it'll have a 2-7X Redfield that'll work for the long-range I'll do. I put the max range at...
