I'm talking about getting to a mile with a 300 Win Mag. If there is a better way than using a heavy high-BC bullet, I'm interested.
Some of the solid copper options do reduce weight without sacrificing BC, thereby giving more potential MV.
I don't have a barrel suitable for those Warner 198gr...
yobuck,
I'd be curious to hear what bullet you would choose for the light/fast recommendation you offered. And how much retained velocity/drift it would have at a mile.
I'm not a long range guru nor close. I just feel fortunate to live in a place where it is not too hard to find places to really stretch a rifle out, play with different bullets. Great way to learn what is possible, and where the wheels start falling off.
Everybody has opinions. I wasn't providing an opinion. I provided quantified facts and included the conditions. Two different things altogether.
They say a person with an experience, is never at the mercy of a person with an opinion. Might be something to that.
I've shot beside Broz at a mile, him with his 300 WinMag/215 Berger at about 3000 fps. Me using 30-06/208 Amax at around 2700 fps.
I was struggling and getting a few hits. Broz was making consistent repeatable hits. We were shooting at rocks about 1 moa in size.
We were at about 4300 ft...
Some might say the best thing to do is rebarrel to 6.5 Creedmoor...….grin.
Most of my long range shooting is field shooting, so I wanted something reasonably portable.
Here are some of the things I believe rate some thought in making the factory rifle perform it's best at long range:

The 208 does hold onto velocity pretty well.
This is an old target. When I first started testing the 208 Amax in my 1/12 308.
208 Amax, MV 2480 fps via RL15, range 1120 yards. The black square is 5x5 inches. Steel is 15 inches wide.
208 Amax, (NOT moly coated)
48.0 gr RL-17
CCI 200 primer
milsurp brass
3.10" OAL (kisses lands in my factory Rem varmint barrel)
2580 fps in 20.5" barrel, per Magnetospeed chrono
As always, start low and work up. Every rifle is different.
I'm still shooting 208 Amax in a 1/12. It holds together pretty good to about 1500 yards. I've played at a mile+, but it's getting kind of dicey out there.
I'm at 4000 ft elev.
I've been using a SLIK Sprint 150 with a 65mm Vortex Razor. Max height is 64", but wind will push it around if it's up that high. Weight with the ball head is about 2.3 lbs.
It's not bad. I have been looking at the SLIK Sprint Mini to save about a half pound, since I generally use it...
I generally load three rounds of each increment in powder charge, or seating depth.
If the 3-round group is too loose, that can be discarded.
If the 3-round group looks good, I'll try a 10-round group to see how that holds up.
A lot of year is cool enough around here that my barrels just don't get that hot.
If it's mid summer, 80s-90s, I'll get up and take a break for a few minutes and put the rifle in the shade of the truck with the action open and letting a little breeze flow through it. Maybe 5 minute pause or...
