    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

The .243 I have now will be the base for this project. I have a Savage barrel nut wrench on the way, so I can go with a different barrel in the future. I will be ordering a thumb hole stock from Boyds after I get back from a vacation we are taking tomorrow. I will shorten it, fit a Sims pad...

Way better than the best map

I agree Google earth is great for you guys in the West. One thing to be careful of is the vertigo factor. I made myself quite sick last summer scouting the Yellowstone River with Google Earth. The flyover feature is great but I got carried away and tried to fly the full length of the river in...

    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

The heavier and longer barrel was not being considered to improve accuracy. It was being considered to increase weight, and reduce recoil. The first step is going to be a different stock. That may be all that is needed. If there is still enough recoil to bother the ol' guy, we will go from...

    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

The fact is I have a .223 in wood that I could steal the stock from. I want to build him a better rifle. To my thinking, making the gun much heavier should reduce the recoil to almost nil. I looked at those 6X Lupolds on the Opticszone site. The price seems quite good. As I think about it...

    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

He hunts out of an elevated box blind. Rebuilding that with a shooting bench is also on my to do list for this summer. The only time he hunts where there is no blind, is during Deer drives. He is always a sitter and often has to cover 200+ yards in several directions. He uses his ATV to get...

    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

Thanks for all the information. It gives a lot to think about. I do hand load for the .243. To be honest, it seems like a marginal Deer round to me. He lost one deer this year to a poorly placed shot. If I can get him to shoot enough to get rid of the flinch, the .243 will be fine. He...

    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

Seeing as how he is very nearly deaf, and uses very expensive hearing aids, I don't think the report of the rifle will be an issue for him. I use electronic protection on my much younger ears while at the range. The question still is, what barrel?

    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

[ QUOTE ] If you can spend the money I would build him a heavier 243 with a good brake and set up to shoot the 105 amax. If not, have the rifle you have worked on with the upgrades you mentioned and get a brake. [/ QUOTE ] Is there any reason to not use the savage action to build a heavier...

    Very Low Recoil Deer Rifle

I have been lurking here for a few weeks now. I can tell in that amount of time that you all can answer my questions better than most. I live and hunt in Michigan. Long range for us is about 400 yards. I know this is medium range for most of you westerners, but it is what we have here. My...
