We have used 6x45 cal in SA for years, 223 cal rifle were banned in most provinces so we converted our 223's to 6x45's. The calibre is a good all rounder for springbok, impala, bushbuck size animals, we regularly shot out beyond 400 yards on the Karoo plains while hunting springbok.

My elk rifle is the same as my moose rifle - mannlicher-schoenauer m72 in 7x64 Brenecke. It will push a 154gr bullet@around 3000fps with enough IMR 4350 stuffed in the cartridge.

The modern hunter has a huge selection of calibre's and weapons available to hunt with - Elk (contrary- to popular belief) are really not that hard to kill - a well placed bullet from a 6.5mm cartridge will do it nicely as would a 270, 280, 7mm etc etc....... If people want to spew rubbish...

There are ranges in both Mission and Chilliwack - try both and choose which suits your needs best - Chilliwack may be the only long range one though!

Don't you know only magnum cartridges are capable of killing elk? Stay away from .280 rem, 30 06's, 308's, 260 rem, 6.5 x any thing, he'll even 9.3x62's may not be big enough!
