Items needed for a long stay in the backcountry.

Some already talked about the (hard) choices to be made. One may be if you should have to rifles with you or just one. If you hunt consistently as a pair only one might be needed and you could do away with bulky 3-5 kg. However if you plan to split up a bit two rifles are of course needed and...

    Mountain hunt daypack essentials

There is a vast amount of knowledge and in our world, some of it gone but a good deal alive. Hunting out of your backpack in midst of the wilderness is a great way to refresh your sense of live. Something I rarely see is a discussion on the way how to carry game home. Arguably the ideal carrier...

    Mountain hunt daypack essentials

There are many great tips in this thread, but one should always remember the perhaps most important thing. Learn, try, practice, remember the relevant stuff and think, think, think while hunting (camping etc) in the great outdoors. Knowledge in our brain weights nothing.

Rifle burst tests, how good is your rifle?

Hunting is also a big tradition here and this was indeed the only instance of a barrel burst which I knew personally off. He suspects that snow entered the muzzle of the slung rifle when it touched one of the many low-hanging snow-covered branches of the forest or when some of it fell down due...

Rifle burst tests, how good is your rifle?

Agree with A and possibly C, but not with B. This was a nice and clear scientific test which can simply gives the consumer solid data about how certain rifles perform in a well defined extreme case. BTW a friend of mine hunted once during winter high up the mountains. As he fired at a roe...

Rifle burst tests, how good is your rifle?

Some facts about this test: a) It is Swedish test, not a Finnish one. That is pretty big of a difference, even for non-Fennoscandinavians. So it is pretty hard to make the argument that this test was made to suit the Finnish, Italian or German rifles. For anybody half-informed about European...

How short a barrel for a compact 308 with little muzzle flash?

As I hunt during dusk and dawn even more often than in daylight, often well up in the mountains I need a rather compact and light weapon which has as little muzzleflash as possible. A sound moderator/suppressor is not legal in my country and I'm - perhaps not yet - a reloader. What do you...

    Lets talk .338 bullets

I know that this is longrangehunting, but has anybody tested the lightest (160gr) TTSX bullet in .338 both for accuracy and on on live targets? I'm not a reloader, but might turn one. If it does work as intended it should be a very pleasant bullet for deer and elk (moose) to shoot out of a...

Does a short barrel need a faster twist?

Hm, interesting. The barrel length thus influences the needed spin through the increased velocitiy. The 1-11 twist near the crown of a 26" barrel will spin the bullet accordingly a little bit faster than the one near the crown of a 20" one. Did one of the members here experience an sudden...

Does a short barrel need a faster twist?

Hi We all know that a longer bullet needs a faster twist to stabilize the projectile. A longer barrel can spin a bullet longer. Is it thus able to achieve the same stabilization as a shorter barrel with a slightly slower twist? Any experience with it?
