I found the gelcoat is a good 1/8" thick in that area. I don't think you could remove 1/4" without weakening the fiber layer too much.

Sounds like it was set back about 1/2 thread. As long as the head space is OK, you're good to go.

Check the run out on the ones that don't chamber. See if there's a noticable scrape on one side of the bullet (between the ogive and case) after trying to chamber it.

If your clocking over 2900 fps with the 300s I would try backing off until you hit the 2800 - 2850 fps sweet spot. If that dose'nt show an improvement try the 250 MK and Retumbo at around 2950-3050.
