The best way to gain 'experience' of this effect is with an air rifle. With an air rifle (with a legal UK limit of 12 ft/lbs) a 50 yard shot is a long one with a lot of drop. Take that same shot up into the trees and the amount of drop reduces drastically. You learn quickly to compensate when...

i also use the vortex harness - (Leica's inside though!) and you ca add little pouches to the straps for range finder, bits and pieces as necessary. As note I wear mine every day when walking my dogs so it gets a lot of use and it has lasted me really well.

Along with the suggestions above regarding bullet weight etc. Why not use a brake / moderator (if legal where you are) to sight in? Shoot to get your groups / zero with the brake . mod which substantially reduce felt recoil and then remove for the hunt? You can test to see if it has same POI...

How can a slug take them off their feet if they are wearing bodyarmour? If that was the case it would take the firer off their feet too (every action has an equal and opposite reaction and all that). Not arguing about it being potent though.

I shoot a 300 wby and a 7mm rem mag amongst others. Love them both. I agree with your comments above, the &'s are easier to shoot, but I do great a big smile when my 300Wby booms and that plate reacts like someone has hit it with a bus!
