    Necessary precision to kill something

This is an entertaining thread. In my point of view the main thing many of us have challenges in understanding is that at longer ranges the error caused by windage by far exceeds the inherent dispersion of the gun and the shooter. Even if you were a 0.0 MOA shooter and had a 0.0 MOA gun we'd be...

Help me decide which 22LR bolt action

One more vote for Tikka T1x. It's an excellent rifle straight out of box, available with 16" barrel, works like a charm and you can retrofit into ANY T3x stock so the sky is the limit in case you want to turn it into something else than what it already is. It almost feels like a no-brainer to me.

One alternative might be to get a Tikka T3 or Tikka T3x action and start building a rifle around that. So not fully custom, but customish. Most likely it would be something like -T3 action around 600€ or so used -KRG Bravo, Sako Green 600€ or a nice laminate stock. Though I have told myself to...

    Ammo and component prices

Just bought 1 kg of Vihtavuori gunpowder and 400 pcs of RWS large rifle primers in Scandinavia. The powder (converted to USD for clarity) was 142 USD and the primers 26 USD per 100 pcs. Since 2020 the powder price has increased 30% and the primer price is 300-400% higher. Well, I guess it's a...

What is the MOST FUSSY cartridge...and LEAST?

I haven't dealt with a large amount of calibers, but 22LR (which I still shoot the most) is extremely challenging. Occasionally a box of el cheapo shoots great. The next lot doesn't. If you try a box of high quality ammo that shoots great in your friend's rifle it might be all over the place. Or...

    We know its true...

I always say that some people play golf or own a sail boat, which costs even more and produces even less meat. Game meat is the most expensive free food there is.

    Scope field evaluations on rokslide

The reaction to my 0.3 mrad was no surprise. What I meant is that if you shoot a group in each month of the year, some of them might be .1 or .15 mrad left and another one .1 or .15 mrad right. I think in real life this is the kind of deviation we have to live with. By checking the zero before...

    Scope field evaluations on rokslide

Standard procedure for whom? I don't really do super long range stuff but require adequate accuracy and I haven't changed my zero for years. It's a Zeiss Diavari with Optilocks on a Tikka mount. Although I have to admit that if I'd travel long distances to hunt and have the rifle thrashed...

Planning my 40 yo birthday present

That's an alternative. But as it's often freezing and snowing here I'm not sure if I'd really enjoy a chassis. It's super cold to handle and gathers snow inside it. I'm sure a Tac A1 or similar would be a super nice rig on a warm day on the range though. But I think for occasionally carrying...

Planning my 40 yo birthday present

My hunt is sitting in a blind (with a relatively good shooting table) or on the edge of a field, waiting for the animals to appear. In this case the rifle is either resting on a rock, treestump or similar or then I use a tripod or StableSticks type of a support. Practically no need to shoot...

Planning my 40 yo birthday present

I'm pretty sure the custom will not be my choice, but I'm curious to learn what is it that @Black Hat got with the custom rig he didn't find from the factory rifles? Not trying to argue which one is better, but I'm curious to learn. If it's just the will to build a custom, that's more than OK as...

Planning my 40 yo birthday present

This rifle doesn't have to be able to handle anything larger than a white tailed deer. I already have a 30-06 and see no reason to go for anything bigger. On the top of my caliber list are 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win and 6.5x55 SE. I'm not looking for a safe queen, but for something that will see a...

Some Piece of equipment you feel is overly hyped

Expensive supertactical bipods. I've used chinese 10 dollar crap for >10 years, never failed, and don't think I'd see any difference in accuracy by changing into a 400 $ bipod.

Planning my 40 yo birthday present

This project is progressing with the best possible way which is to get a proper scope. I came across a Black Friday offer of a brand spanking new Steiner M7xi 4-28x56 with MSR reticle for 2000 euros which I consider as a steal, so I had to go for it. It will be sitting on top of my old Tikka in...

    Accuracy lost on warmer weather

This interesting topic has come to a conclusion of not really having a conclusion. I once tried shooting cold and warm cartridges one after another and they grouped pretty much similarly. Also it seems that the accuracy at 150 meters is significantly worse than 100 meters. I've also shot...
