7mm STW on Shilen DGR action

Thanks for the support 7stw. Don't worry I'm not worried. I decided on a this thread because I thought the Shilen offering was unique and seemed worthwhile, but there is surprisingly little out there on it. I figured I would fix that. So, this thread will document this path to help someone...

7mm STW on Shilen DGR action

I had my new Shilen actioned 7mm STW out today for rounds 20-40. This time I used Double Tap 175 gr Nosler Partition cartridges. Still working on dope and getting used to new rifle. Like before this was prone off Harris bipod, though this time with improvised rear support because I forgot my...

    stw build

Brushunter - This is rifle is the first time I've used a custom action - and for design reasons I moved towards the shilen. 1. I wanted a BDL format and the ability to have a repeater when hunting. This meant that if I used a Savage or Rem700 action I would have to have a smith open up the...

    stw build

Welcome to the 7mm stwesterners. I'm new myself, just finished building one. If you plan from the get go is to buy a rem700, have it trued and install a new barrel, it might be worth buying a quality rem700 clone, from Stiller, for example - there are others. It probably comes out about the...

260 rem or 308 win for new build

For paper and ringing steel out to 1000, I have put 1500 - 2000 rounds through my off the shelf Savage in the last two years. As others have said, excellent BC bullets (I use 140 gr VLD), easy recoil, and easy to reload for. Barrel life won't be as good as a 308, but still pretty good.

New rifle for colorado elk 2013

I believe you have received good advice on what is good for hunting elk. As far as reloading is concerned, it is worth it to learn. But now is the WORST possible time for someone to start. Some components are really hard to find for those that have experience looking and knowing what to buy...

    tang safety action?

I'll let you decide what are good actions:D. But Sako, Savage and Tikka all have tang safeties that I can think of right off.

    Building gun from parts?

You may very well know all this but in case you don't. Depending on what you plan on doing you will need to consider old or new screw spacing for the short action, flat or rounded action top, side or bottom bolt release, and as someone already mentioned whether or not it is a standard or large...

7mm STW on Shilen DGR action

It looked to me like a very good price point from a company with an excellent reputation. To realize the good price you have to willing to do some of the work of putting together the entire rifle. But that is part of the fun anyway.

7mm STW on Shilen DGR action

Thanks for the info and offer mudrunner. I will start with the 165 gn classic hunters that I have with RL22 - maybe not ideal but it's what I have. Now should a bottle of H1000 show up on the shelves ...

7mm STW on Shilen DGR action

Here is the pic, but frankly it doesn't show much because it is all black. Whereas a Remington bolt is a solid piece the Savage (and Shilen) bolt has the head pinned in place. Here is Savage's vid description of their bolt head. Really is a useless photo (sorry abou that)

7mm STW on Shilen DGR action

Thanks MudRunner From reading these posts looks like 2, 3 or more rifles in this caliber isn't unusual:D (I better keep it at one for awhile!)

7mm STW on Shilen DGR action

Thanks 7mmstw, I can't wait to spend more time with it. I had most all reloading supplies before Newtown except for ... powder and primers. I eventually grabbed a bottle of RL 22 (5#) and Win mag primers when they appeared on otherwise barren shelves. I have two types of bullets on...
