What caliber to shoot 140 - 142 grain bullets 3300 fps or more?

I thought it was a forum for long range. 500 yards isn’t long range. Maybe I am in the wrong place for what I considered to be long range. My bad.

    300 PRC or 28

Here we go with the Elk theory. Why does everyone have to bring up the “ if ya shooting elk”. Nothing said about Elk. Go with the PRC. It will do what you want, just hand load what ever you need. And about the to much empty space in the case. Wrong load data, lucky it didn’t blow up on him.

What caliber to shoot 140 - 142 grain bullets 3300 fps or more?

I agree exactly, I guess i just get wound up with people who ask questions, that if they understood ballistics, they wouldn’t be asking in the first place.

What caliber to shoot 140 - 142 grain bullets 3300 fps or more?

Why would you be using a soft bullet for an elk?

What caliber to shoot 140 - 142 grain bullets 3300 fps or more?

Let’s say we use the M80 for example ( 149 gn 7.62x51mm , nato.308 ). It’s max effective range is approximately 850-900 yards with around 400 ft lbs of energy at +- 2700 FPS. Now a .208 grain ELD running around 2400 FPS has approximately 575-600 ft lbs with around 1300 yards max effective range...

What caliber to shoot 140 - 142 grain bullets 3300 fps or more?

Any off the shelf.260 and up caliber hunting ammunition will take an Elk at 500 yards. I don’t understand the need for such a high velocity. I have had better results with a heavier bullet and slower velocities. They tend to carry further and retain more energy, plus they have a better BC. Just...

    6.5 Creedmor- the Holy Grail?

Ok, transonic, I use 1125 FPS. Faster than this is controlled. Slower is a gamble with out research of shots at that speed. It doesn’t matter how far it drops vurses the other. You can place a shot as long as you can control it all the way up to transonic. Now, heavyweights will travel longer...

    6.5 Creedmor- the Holy Grail?

? What calculations are you using. No way will a 6.5 compete with a 7mm at long range. You set up on the most perfect ridge, the wind is in your face. Your glassing and boom, there he is. You didn’t even have to bugle. You range him,,,,, dang 1500 yards. You look over at me and hear the...

    6.5 Creedmor- the Holy Grail?

140 grain for Elk? That's like shooting a hog with a 22 mag. might work, but not likely. The Military has been using 7.62 for centuries, and after WWII ,the Corp Purchased Several Lots of Winchester 7MM. They preferred this cal for long range accuracy, but due to the lack of rounds produced ,it...

    DPMS double fire issues

I think buff spring is really heavy, and reads are cold. Max on that powder with that gr bullet is 47.5. What's your velocity, and are you crimping them.

When I acquire a new (to me) fire arm ,I load up from the middle of the load range table from the bullet manufacture table. 6 rounds at each charge, increasing with .5 grains per charge . I use a large white poster board with 9 red dots equally spaced on the board, kind of like tic tack toe. I...
