    Donuts to go UPDATE

Nope. As I noted in my last explanation I stopped seating a bullet when the push got hard and marked the bullet at the case mouth with a sharpie so that I could tell how far into the neck the bullet was when it hit the hard spot. I pulled the bullet and held it next to the case mouth so see...

    Donuts to go UPDATE

I erroneously decided that the hard spot in the bullet seating process was a donut at the neck/shoulder junction because it would start fairly smooth after the initial push to open the neck to accept the bullet, then it hit a hard spot that required a hard push to get past. The bullets that I...

    Donuts to go UPDATE

This has been a learning experience for sure. I assumed that my 223 Lapua cases had developed donuts while I was seating bullets and a good percentage of them seemed to hit a hard spot in the seating stroke. I sent 5 cases to L.E.Wilson and their tech said they did NOT have donuts. I had...

Airedale56, here are the pictures. The first is a drawing of my reticle hold on the 1/2 inch dot and the second is the group with that hold.

No apology needed. I figured that you were contributing the discussion in a respectful way. The internet can lead us in all sorts of wild directions and it is up to us to sort out which direction we take. I've decided to try the inside neck reamer because of my experience sizing necks and...

    donuts to go

Airedale56, If I've absorbed all of that it appears to verify my decision to purchase an inside the neck reamer. Except it also advocates for an external neck trimmer, which is not my intention to purchase at this time. Maybe I've just become more sensitive to the feel of the bullet...

    donuts to go

Well I tried backing off of my neck size bushing to reduce the depth I was sizing the necks. By doing that the number of hard donuts that I felt when seating bullets dropped quite a bit. But I can still feel that donut on most cases so I've decided to buy an L.E.Wilson case trimmer with a...

Yep, I'm using SAC bushings. I think I'm going to short size the necks and see what happens.

I know you mean to lengthen the throat. Both barrels are chambered with my custom reamer that has almost no throat. As it is unless I go to a single manual feed ramp the magazine length is not there.

    donuts to go

Yep, I understand that the neck shoulder junction is where the donut grows. Some of my Lapua cases now have what feels like a significant hard spot when seating the long ELDMs past that junction. The possible jump in pressure concerns me from both a safety and accuracy issue. I have a 223...

    donuts to go

I shoot a LOT. I have a pair of 223 varmint rifles that I go through 1000 rounds each every year during chuck season. The barrels are 8 twist which allows me to use 75g ELDM bullets. Those long bullets have the base seated below the case-shoulder junction, well below the neck shoulder...
