My condolences on the loss of your father and friend. I’m sure you will be thinking of him often and he will be looking down on you.

I have killed 2 elk with .270 win and 7mm rem mag. The .270 gave me a quicker kills. The reason was bullet expansion. The 7mm took two shots. Granted the 7mm was lung shots and I clipped the heart with .270. My Nosler ballistic tips in the 7mm did not expand as well. Clean through. Not an expert...

I shoot a Tikka T3 .270 and have harvested several whitetail and one elk. Hand loads worked up by my brother. It is my go to rifle. Never had a problem and the gun and round are super accurate. I’ve always felt it was a winner

This also a reason to shoot a rifle made for your shooting orientation. Left hand action for lefties. Usually the failure will blow out the action.

I am big proponent of shooting a left handed rifle if left handed. One of my favourite rifles is the Tikka. Good luck choosing
