My 1963 German action Mark V is also marked .300 Magnum.
It is definitely a .300 Weatherby. Most likely that gun you are looking at is also.
Just checking Gresham's excellent book on Weatherby shows 300H&H was chambered in 1958-59 in the Mark V built in South Gate Serial numbers from 15000-16224...
+1 on the .257 Weatherby. So far, mine has shot under an inch with 3 different factory loads. Here in Kalifornia I finally found some 100gr TTSX that will be tested shortly. That will likely be my go to deer load if it performs.
