    Suppressor failure. (No Kidding)

I’ve been behind an M-249 before in the Army. They get hot and uncomfortable for the shooter after several hundred rounds. The guy behind the trigger got up and walked away pretty quickly when he was done. I can’t imagine he wanted to be there anymore.

    Timing a muzzle brake

I agree with all the above statements. Not all brakes are designed to blend perfectly to the barrel, and so shims are expected. The AR platforms almost all use a crush washer or a similar device to align the flash suppressor. The Surefire brakes all come with washers of varying thickness and a...

“West Coast” Armory. I think that says it all. Complete jackassery.

    Which new lathe?

I have to agree with this. It may take some work but it’s worth it. Here is the 12x36 Logan I restored and installed a VFD on.

    Which new lathe?

A VFD is absolutely the way to go. Get a three phase motor and install a VFD and you will be all set. They are not difficult to deal with or install and make things so much better. Rotary phase converters are very antiquated, in my opinion. They are expensive and loud and you still don’t get the...

    Which new lathe?

I've owned an old South Bend, a Clausing, and currently have a Logan. Most people will tell you old American steel is better than new Chinese any day, and for the most part I agree. The biggest issue with old American is you don't always know what you're getting in to. Unless you have a lot of...

No, I'm not saying that he charges a lot. I'm saying that for a hobby gunsmith like me, his method and machines would result in an overall rifle cost that would be astronomical.

Show off!! :p That’s the way to do it if you have the skill and lots and lots of cash. He wins, his rifle would cost more than mine. Good thing he earns money doing it.

LOL!! That's the truth! I have a friend who is really into expensive guns, the likes of Knight's Armament and H&K. He has several safes full. He always says he needs to make a list of guns and their values so if he dies, his wife will know what they are worth. BUT, he always says he's afraid to...

Susquatch, I like the way you think. I am also an engineer by training, Aerospace to be exact, though I haven't used my training in many years. I got into rifle building, or as others have termed it probably more accurately, "gun plumbing," because I wasn't content buying a precision rifle. I...

Also, what KyCarl said about the lugs is correct. You will, ideally, need to cut those faces square to the raceway as well. Then, lap the bolt lugs to match. If you do all that, all the mating surfaces should be "perfectly" in line, giving the best odds at accuracy. As far as not touching the...

I've recut several receivers. I'm not exactly sure what you are proposing, but it sounds like are trying to square the face of the receiver to the existing threads? What you need to do is cut the threads so they are parallel to the the receiver and square the face as well. The best way to do...
