Scenar bullet failure! No really, it was bad.

Like one of the other posters mentioned dry materials don't cause copper tipped bullets to mushroom very well. Also at 1000 yard that bullet is probably travelling around 1250 fps so. Your bullet deformed quite a bit though and would have produced a large wound channel in doing so. Maybe not...

    Digital vs beam!!

Depends. If your beam scale has a mirrored section around the zero mark then it's probably more consistent than a digital. I have a Lee balance and Dillon and CED digital scales. The Lee balance doesn't have the mirrored zero and parallax error as measured on the digital scales runs as high as...

Loading for a particular barrel length

Like the other mentioned you will need to work up your own loads. That said, in general with a shorter barrel you will get lower velocities, I would guess maybe 125 fps with 6" less barrel, for the same load. If you are a fan of the shockwave theory then the optimum barrel times change as well...

    243 loads

Been shooting .243 for a long time. My favorite bullets are the Nosler Ballistic Tips and the Speer 70 gr TNT. Also had good results with the standard Remington CoreLokt. The ballistic tips will work for all the game you mentioned with proper shot placement for the bullet selected. The 55,70...

    Weight Variations?

Case weight in a lot can vary several grains. Light weight bullets seem to be +- .2gr heavier bullets maybe +- .5 gr. The links show some of the measurements I've made. http://www.geocities.com/v6racer.geo/shooting/data_files/image001.gif...

    Barrel Twist

Yes, the longer the bullet is the more spin it needs to stabilize. There are several reasons why not all guns have real fast twists. Faster spin exaggerates the centrifugal effects on the bullet. The bullet is forced to rotate around the bore axis as it goes down the barrel. When it leaves the...

    keyholes

Do you know what velocity your bullets are leaving the barrel? Keyholing generally means the spin isn't enough to keep the bullets stable. You can overcome this by speeding the bullets up a bit, getting a faster twist barrel, or going to shorter (lighter) bullets. You can check this using some...

243 & 1-9.25" barrel twist at long range????

Re: 243 & 1-9.25\" barrel twist at long range???? The longer bullets require a faster twist rate to shoot really well. These are the 100 grain alloy bullets like the grand slam and the 105 grAmax, 107gr SMK, and 115gr Lapua(?). Hornady recommends a 1:8 twist or faster for the A-max. To get it...

    243 a-max

The bullets will work ok. One thing that should be considered is that the bullets require a 1:8 or faster (1:7) twist rate to stabilize at normal .243/6mm velocities. Your normal factory rate of 1:10 or 1:9.125 won't stabilize them properly and they will precess or tumble

    questions about redding dies???

The advantage of the bushing die is you can change the bushing and therefore the amount of sizing you do to the necks. They come with an expander ball but you can remove it. The less you work the brass the more likely it is to remain concentric, provided your chamber is concentric too. The...

Question about seating the bullet straight

Since you mentioned your weapon is an AR-15 you will need to full size resize to insure rounds will chamber in semi-auto mode. As far as runout goes there are a few factors that come to mind. The more you work the brass the more likely you are to increase runout. This applies to the neck mostly...

    FL vs neck sizing

Neck sizing tends to give the best accuracy and case life. The only thing you're changing dimensions on is the neck so the case fits snug in the chamber and better aligns with the bore. By annealing the necks regularly you can reload cases for years. I still use cases I have from the 70s. The...
