    Semi or O/U

Well, I went down that path with grandkids myself. Having watched a slow motion video of their head and body jerking at time of discharge made a point for me to study recoil. Chuck Hawks has a chart for shotgun recoil.. Study it closely. I had my 6 and 7 year olds shooting 4 3/4 lbs Franchi AL...

    Shooting after heart surgery

Well, look at it like this: Go hunting, be where you want to be. If you see something that you can’t live without, literally, then shoot it. There is such a thing as a good death. Define it.

your 1st love? memorable or not

My first one was a Stevens bolt action single shot .22. It was not accurate, Dad told me that it had a crooked barrel. About 2 or 3 years later when I was about 10 I traded it for a Cushman scooter. It could haul two littler kids on back with sling shots for rabbits. It was a blast! Dad asked...

    What’s your spookiest hunting experience?

Back in 1980 and old friend and I were striper fishing on the bank at Lake Texoma. We had parked the truck down a trail just up from the bank in the woods in early spring. It was real dark from no moon and we were casting top water red fins and slowly pulling them in so a V-ripple would form on...

    Kaboom 💥 Today 😟

More thinking has me inclined to think the barrel may have been obstructed for what ever readon from the 11th cartridge. That explosion was a critical failure and could have been worse. For me, I would be surprised if it shoots well again. Check it over, it may be ruined and dangerous to fire...

    Kaboom 💥 Today 😟

Looks to me that the bolt failed. Why, because there is no evidence of case to chamber leakage. Why would the bolt break out the bottom rim into the magazine? On the barrel, there are drilled relief ports to direct case head leaks at and behind to bolt lugs for what ever reason. Show us the...

    375 ultra mag

Yes, they are too disruptive. I can handle the recoil but need more enjoyable practice with it.

    375 ultra mag

I have a 375 RUM and have shot some factory 300 gr though it. Standing off-hand while leaning against a pole is the only safe for ones shoulder to fire it. On sand bags is not tolerable, it will hurt the shoulder. I suppose a double bagged led sled could contain the recoil but I doubt the stock...

    Porcupine down

When your dogs get quilled the best way to remove them humanely is to use scissors to trim the end of the quill. This will un-trip the barb that is keeping the quill stuck in the flesh, or skin. Trim all of them then easily remove them with pliers.

Remembering the Older Days of Reloading/Shooting

I remember buying a brand new Sweet 16 when I was 15 with the money that was earned chopping weeds around oil wells and other equipment. I paid $185.00 for it, I had only made $200.00 at $1.00/hr that summer when my boss died when he fell off a tank while measuring it. So no more job. But I did...

Bullet falling out of barrel in cold conditions

Back when the Thompson Center Hawken came out I always used pure lead greased patched balls with pillow ticking for the patch. It was a .50 caliber. The day before deer season opened for muzzle loaders I was inclined to try a .50 cal maxi-ball and tried one at a gun range at Cuyahoga Falls north...

    "best" modern factory cartridge

30-06, 7 mag, 300 wm are al less than 30 degree shoulder. They do not pertain to being included in the question of 30-35 degree shoulder. Although, the above mentioned calibers are “my” calibers.

    stuck ball

I stuck a 50 caliber maxi bullet down a Thompson Center Hawkin once. It was 2 or 3 days before the season started and I had to get it out. It would not move downward (even with a hammer) against a slight powder charge. So I located a 18” long drill bit extension that would hold a 1/4” metal...

    7mm STW Throat Erosion Measured

Berger addresses this exact problem in a separate report on their website: https://bergerbullets.com/vld-making-shoot/. In fact, they admit that load development could very well wear out the barrel when trying to “touch the lands”. This article talks about the sweet spot that could be a jump of...
