I am sure it isn't an exact replacement for long range shooting, and it isn't cheap to get a good one, but a GOOD pellet gun can definitely help you judge wind at shorter ranges. You need a good one though, not a break barrel.

This may be a moot point now, but it sounds like a cone point set screw. Should be available in hardware stores in standard sizes. Metric (at least in my area) can be a little harder to find. I'd probably try to shorten it if it were me, but if you end up needing a replacement, this may help.
