Quest for a Mile- 300 Win Mag

Is that due to less friction from thinner air?

Quest for a Mile- 300 Win Mag

During the Civil War a soldier was dumped at 1390yards with a Whitworth Rifle. Thinking a Win Mag can ring a gong at a mile. I’ve dumped Whitetail corner to corner across a 40 acre potato field before with Browning Abolt 300 WM wearing a Leaupy 3x9x40 and 150 gr ballistic tips. Not a mile but...

    X-bolt eclipse hunter 25-06 or 6.5 Creedmoor

A quick look at the G7 BC’s show the .257 131 ACE at .331 and 6.5 147 ELDX at .352 and the 6.5 140 gr in the.320 neighborhood. Seems like the ACE 131 gr has leveled the playing field. With a 257 Creedmoor wildcat given all its design attributes and the ACE bullet one would have a nice package...

    X-bolt eclipse hunter 25-06 or 6.5 Creedmoor

Funny thing. I just checked a different forum and ran a search on 257 Creedmoor. Back in 2011 I was talking about how someone should make a 130-ish gr 25 cal bullet. Guess my wish came true. If only I still had my 25-06. I wonder how the 25-06 running the 131 gr ACE compares to the Creedmoor...

    X-bolt eclipse hunter 25-06 or 6.5 Creedmoor

I would like to say thanks for taking on such an endeavor. I have for years said that the 25-06 and 257 Weatherby just needed a good bullet in the 125-130 grain range. Of course everyone said “just use a 270” I’m happy to see someone giving the 25 some serious legs. Granted I may not ever...

    X-bolt eclipse hunter 25-06 or 6.5 Creedmoor

That’s good news. I haven’t looked at .25 cal bullets in a long time. I’ve been preoccupied shooting my 280AI and other 7mm’s. Hopefully the 25-06 will hang on as I found it to be a fantastic deer round with anything 100 grains or better. At this point in the game my herd of rifles are...

    X-bolt eclipse hunter 25-06 or 6.5 Creedmoor

I have owned both and both are very capable for what you intend to hunt. Your issue will be finding ammo for the 25-06. I highly recommend starting to hand load your own ammo. Anyone who likes guns and hunting will appreciate loading their own ammo. Unfortunately the 25 caliber is dying off...

    What's your rifle lineup?

Jrkotz: I have been a 280 and 280AI fan for a long while now. My dad bought one of the first run Remington 700 Mountain Rifles in 280. He couldn’t quite get it to put the third round into a nice little clover leaf group so he sold it eventually and bought a Browning A Bolt in 280. Helluva good...

    What's your rifle lineup?

I will be only changing up my fleet caliber wise and keeping it to three center fires. I’m going to rebarrel my 280 to a 35 Whelen, put some quality irons on it and work up a solid 250 gr load for it. I have become a bear hunting over hounds addict and found this to be about as perfect as it...

    Brakes on a hunting gun

Well, you do what you want and I’ll gladly wear hearing protection. Since I’ve started my hearing hasn’t diminished any further. It works for me. Not sure how a hearing device that allows you to hear at normal ranges but protects you above a certain dB level is “dangerous” in the field...

    What's your rifle lineup?

I started my journey of thinning the herd a few years back. I’ve gone from thirty rifles down to three plus a 22lr bolt action. 6.5 Creedmoor Savage, 280AI Ruger 77 and my dads old Browning Abolt in 280 Rem. I’m quite happy with them all even though they pretty much duplicate each other. No...

    Brakes on a hunting gun

I would recommend these braked rifle or not. I also have some hearing loss from shooting as tests have shown left ear worse than right being right handed. I’m a Veteran of five years followed by 20 years as a state trooper so many rounds down range. I use a Walkers Game ear, one of the old...

Which guns do you use for predator hunting?

My predator hunting usually follows checking my traps so I usually have my Ruger M77 carbine .223 and a sidearm, either a 22 or 40 S&W. I also use a 12 ga with #4 buck or turkey loads in combination with my .223 if I'm out stricly calling.

    264 WM or 270WSM

Thinking of looking into a flat, hard hitting number in a semi-light package. Looking at some basic ballistics it seems that the 270 WSM may be what the 264 hoped of being. And, in a shorter overall package with more availability of ammo and components. I'm thinking WT, black bear, maybe...
