    6.5 CM or 260 Rem

Are you dead set on the 260? I would look at the 6.5 and the Win 270. Everyone carries a huge variety of .270 and on paper the 270 out does the 6.5 Just a thought.

If you could only have 3 long guns, which would you choose?

Call me old fashion but I would take the proven old standbys 22LR, Winchester270 and the 300 Win mag. One could make a point that being in Alaska to switch the 300 out to the 375.

    Caliber advice

Any of the 300's will do you. I would give myself room to extend your range a little. I would stay clear of the 7mag and the 6.5 but that is just personal preference.

Are high powered scopes really necessary for hunting?

Do you have to have a high power scope to hunt - NO! With that being said, what are you hunting, where are you hunting (thick forest, the open flats of southern WYO), what rifle do you have. If you look over time the bigger the better is true with scopes. For years it was the strait 4X, then...

What 30 Caliber Bullet for Bison?

We had a hunt for buffalo and there was some rules to caliber and bullet weight for our hunt. It had to a 30 cal or larger, a 180 gr bullet weight minimum. Our guide recommended Nosler partition or similar bullet construction. You had to be able to shoot a 2" 5 shot group @ 100 yards. Shots...

    Caliber choice for Mule deer/Elk????

I'm going to have to vote for the 300's as well. I have killed every large game animal in North America with a 300 win mag except antelope and polar bear. Elk are a large animal, and could be taken with any number of rifles in my opinion I would pick .270 to one of the 30's. I have taken 6...

    Debate time..... caliber selection

I like the 300 win mag, but for a do all... The most popular rifle for hunting ever built is arguably the 30-06. And there is a reason for that. It can take every game animal in north america short of the Brown Bear and the Polar Bear with ease. (you could take one down with one but its not a...

Terminal performance..... velocity vs energy vs retained weight

We all want the mythical magic bullet, There is not a one do all bullet out there. Pick a bullet construction that you like. I like the pass through, my bullets of choice Accubonds, Accubond LR, TTSX and LRX. Shot placement and accuracy trump everything.

$1,500 to spend, what to get for a gun

I like the 300 win mag, great selection of factory ammo if you do not reload. With just a little tweaking it can be a good 1000yd rifle. As a rule I like to spend as much on the optics that I can afford. You can get just about any rifle to shoot to 500 yds well. A little bit more on the...

Looking for personal experience with GMX performance on elk

In the 150 gr I like the Nosler Accubonds and Barnes TTSX. but most of the bullets that have been flying around on this thread are suitable for elk. I do like the fact that you are putting bullet construction at the top of your list. Now you just have to find out what your rifle likes to eat...

    Your Ultimate 500 Yard Rig

I'm going to catch a little flack over this, BUT... Anything in the 30 cal line up will work just fine to 500 yards. Get good optics in the 3.5-15 or 4-20 magnification. You may have to play with your loads to get it to tack driving status. Buy the best you can afford, put the time into the...

    What caliber for my needs?

If you are going for factory ammo to shoot in your rifle, I would take a look at the .270 and the 30-06. There are factory loads from everyone with enough variation to get you the best shooting load from either rifle. There is a reason that the 30-06 is the most popular rifle in America.
