I agree, VX-5 or VX-6.

The older 870 should shoot modern 2 3/4 inch slugs just fine. You should not shoot 3 inch shells out of the 2 3/4 receiver. Changing a slug barrel from 1 receiver to another can change the point of impact dramatically.

If you want to reduce recoil, I would go to a gas operated semi-auto. The extra weight and gas operation will help some. You have to realize slug guns kick like heck and just learn to absorb the recoil- don't try to fight it. If you're going to shoot with a scope, get one with at least 4...

135 yards shooting an 870 with a fully rifled barrel, 385 gr Win partition gold 2 3/4 in shells, topped off with a Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5 x 20 scope. Very accurate combo. Sighted in 3 high at 100 it should hit 3 low at 200. Used to shoot a smooth-bore barrel on the 870 with original Brennekes...
