What backpack hunts are you planning for 2014?

Hoping to get a few of what I call "Walkabout" hunts in (overnighter). If all goes right I'll be picking up a hunting dog soon and will be working on him with grouse and rabbits. 4 day hunt for deer. 4 day hunt for elk. Hopefully a 4 day hunt for bear.

    What To Do??

Just from your post it sounds like you are not overly happy with it. Sell it and buy something you'll enjoy.

Your Opinion on Drag bag/mat vs case and bringing mat?

My vote is for the drag bag. I'm a huge fan of gear pulling double duty. I currently own and use one made by Condor. It's survived my hunting adventures and range days. A neat feature it has is removable and/or storable shoulder straps so it can be worn like a backpack. They are a good...

    Water? Life Saver water bottle

Boiling is my backup method, but the things I've been reading say once you bring water to a boil (even at altitude) it has reached a temperature high enough to kill all pathogens. No boil times required, just up to a rolling boil. Just remember boiling won't get rid of chemical impurities.

    Backpack recommendation

Here is what I'm currently using. Badlands Sacrifice (link) Mine weighs 3 lbs 12 oz; 3450 cu in of storage; It has a stainless steel wire internal frame which allows you to pack approx. 100 lbs in/out; useful pockets; great ventilation; durable; look around and you can find good sales...

    Vertical stringing

When you set up your front and rear rests make sure your sling mounts aren't resting on them. Also make sure your rests are far enough away from them, that they don't make contact during the recoil. They can act as pivot / deflection points and cause weird things to happen with your shot group.

    Stock replacement

"What sets this stocks apart from the B&C 2958 is the raised monte carlo cheekrest, set ideally for large, powerful scopes; and the flat/round forend for horizontal stability from a rest." - Stockysstocks I don't shoot rests/bipods alot and I find the flat forends get a bit odd to handle in...

    New reloading bench

I agree With these. My setup isn't near as impressive. I've got a cheap desk with a 4 drawers under it. If you have basic handtools and a little know how you can build a great setup for cheap.

    North NM in December

I've gotten away with 400 in all of my adventures. Temp ranges from low teens to upper 90's. All of my adventures involved lots of movement though.

What type of shelter do you use most often for backpack hunting during rifle season?

Re: What type of shelter do you use most often for backpack hunting during rifle seas Currently using a bivy/tarp combo. It's worked pretty well for me up here in the Pacific Northwest. My only planned change is to use a lighter material for the tarp.

    Building a new hunting rig

.308 is great all around caliber. Easy on the shoulder for all day practice and effective on North American big game. As for Savage....love them. I own Savage, Weatherby, and a Remington 700 in bolt guns. The bolt takes a little more effort to lift, but not enough for me to worry about. I...

    Spotting scope recommendation

I'm currently using a Vortex Viper HD, which is awesome, but outside the price range you mentioned. You can get into the Vortex Viper series for $350 to $500. They are really nice in my opinion, and the warranties are awesome. Lifetime, no fault warranty. After a brutal hailstorm and...
