Ross Seyfried wrote an article on shooting the #1 in fast twist 22-250 IIRC at 600-800 yards. He used Scenar or Sciracco 80 Grain bullets and was getting like a 3" group. If I can find it I'll let you know.

Do you like them for general hunting or just for steep mountain stuff? I'll be looking for a new pair soon, but we don't always hunt in the steep stuff and I can't really swing for 2 pair.

Lapping it incorrectly will ruin it for sure - have someone who knows how to do it take care of it if you want it done. Of course, a lapped barrel will benefit from break in, but a straight factory barrel is a waste of time.

Shoot it, then clean to bare metal when you get home. I don't think you can get much out of a shoot one, clean routine on a factory barrel.

The Super Grades are now made in Portugal...if that matters to you. I just found an NOS Featherweight that is Made in USA, so there are still a few out there if you look around.

Do you have the original stock?

I'd say both are fine, but if it was my choice, I'd pick the Ultramag. There isn't much you couldn't do with that monster.

I don't think that is repairable...
