I did one approx 9 years ago in area 24 in colorado with Sable Mountain Outfitters. It worked out well. I got pricing for them providing the camp and shuttling us in and out and then got a price if I had my own wall tent stove etc and them packing in our equipment. In the end it was far...
I appreciate all the helpful feedback. I should have mentioned that I am ok going for cows since I am a novice and want up my odds.
Getting any of the game commission folks on the phone is difficult.
You will have KE to spare at 400 yards, trajectories will be nearly identical wind drift differential would be minimal. Especially considering the altitude most elk are taken at. I would trust the terminal performance of the standard accubond over the long range accubond.
I am from gibsonia pa and have 1 new box and another box with approx 40-45 200 grain 30 cal accubonds i will sell if you are striking out getting bullets for your hunt. Scott i can be reached at 312-951-4080. If you have 168 grain etips we can trade.
I am hoping to hunt elk more or less DIY and need to be around 5,000 feet elevation. I have breathing problems and a higher elevation hunt is not really an option for me.
I have a 12x16 wall tent and could potentially use an outfitter to pack us in and out.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

No idea what will shoot more accurately for you but I am more impressed with the interbonds terminal performance. They retained weight better and had larger mushrooms in the few cases that I could recover them.
You should be able to find savage drop in shilen barrels prechambered on line for like $270.00. T think I have seen douglas fro around the same price also.
Stainless are little more.
You should only loose around 25FPS per inch with a 06 on average. I have gotten great velocities with RL17 and a 22 inch barrel.
Keep in mind the volume a 30 calibler bore takes up in a 22 inche long barrel. Now the 06 case is only going to displace approx 60 grains H2O so the pressure...
This is from the manufactures website so take it with a grain of salt:
Rifle Powders
Smokeless Short Magnum Rifle
With Reloder 17 reloaders have a powder that meters easy and consistently while providing maximum velocity even in extreme weather. This consistent performance is what...
I cannot remember my ES off hand but the 200 grain loads shot between 5/8" and 3/4" the last time I was at the range. With the 180s I shot the first group into a 3/8" cloverleaf and nothing larger than 3/4" the rest of the time. I remember the 180s ES being the lowest between the 168, 180, and...
Yes they are 30-06 velocities with RL17. For me RL17 velocities are approx 100 FPS faster than anything else I have tried. I am using a savage 116 and I am also loading to just under 65KPSI according to quickload.
I just realized my range was 675 yards not 650 as I had posted and the...
With the loads I have been using I have found that the impact velocity is not a problem for the 200 grain bullets. The typically higher BC of the 200 grain bullets will run down the 180s and they will hit 1800 FPS at nearly the same distance in many cases. This is my experience with the...
I think the velocities have a lot more to do with the pressures you are running and little to do with the cases efficiency. Smaller cases in a given bore will always yield higher efficiency at a given pressure but that does not allow them to overtake the larger case. High Energy N series...
