The US Forest Service is not doing this to save the Elk or Deer. There are Enviromental groups that are saying the " Feral Cows" are damaging the Creel & River banks.

I grew up on range feed beef that had no fat on it . If we feed it grain that we raised it cut into our profits. I remember going out late in the fall when it got cold and shooting a big dry cow and hanging it for a couple of weeks then cutting it up into steaks,roasts and burger. Grandma canned a good amount in the pressure cooker and put it in the root cellar for next summer. Every cut was tougher than shoe leather. The burger was good but very dry and got mixed with ground pork that we raised. The canned beef was to die for when used in a stew or with noodles. If I had the chance to go on this type of hunt I would in a heart beat , pressure can a bunch,make sausage.
Cut some into cubes for stir fry. I'd buy some pork butts and grind it with the beef 70% beef to 30%pork for burger and the sausage. You can buy the seasonings at Amazon, sportsman warehouse etc. Better than a old mule deer in the rut that got gut shot and got hung in camp for a few days.

Which they are my friend! They are damaging the habitat. Just like feral hogs! I'm not defending the "environmentalists" but am defending getting rid of the feral cattle. Get them the F out of there. If they were so good and easy to get to, don't you think a rancher would go in and get them and bring them out. So now there's 150, next years there's 175, the following years there's 205, and then we have even more of a issue. Slaughter them and remove them all I say. Why are you against it, just because the environmental activists also support removing them? What about the numerous NM Outfitters that support removing them? Maybe sometimes both sides get it right. At least I'd like to think so. I'd think if this was such a bad idea the the NMGFD would be pushing back or at least have posted a public opinion on it??

many people gave up hunting because there are no deer!Wild horses cannot be destroyed in the USA or any horse for that matter. Old or sick can be euthanized and buried. The cattle could be rounded up also or authorize a hunt which is a lot cheaper. If shot by helicopters let the darn locals take the **** cows,,, simple solutions,, but the government doesn't like simple & easy
I could use it for sure! I haven't bought any beef in year or so, because I can't afford it living on SS! Sell me a license, for sure!

This whole issue did start from Environmentalist claiming the 50 to 150 Feral Cows were damaging Stream and river banks making the water quality low.. First that is probably hard to do with such little Cows in such a vast area. The environmentalists did not come out to save the deer and elk. They came for the stream creek and river banks like 50 to 150 Cows are destroying the waterways in the area.
I personally am not against harvesting every Feral Cow out there. They don't belong, but then again no cows belong in any western area.
I thought that the local citizens or hunters that want to hunt hard should be able to. Not have the Government pay tens of thousands of $$$ of TAX PAYER $$$$ to have helicopters in with paid hunters just to shoot kill and leave rot.
Contractors will not be doing this hunt.
It's illegal to slaughter horses in the USA and has been for around 20 years, wild or tameGreat question, We have a large herd of wild horses here where I live, Actually just west of here. They have been talking of killing them off. I say sell some permits and go get yourself some "Arbys Horsey Sauce" and have a BBQ!

cost of operating a helicopter is at least $1500.00 per hr and you can probably double that if it's a Government contract . I would suspect some elected state official and some in DC got something put in a bill that helped a state project get done .Sadly that's the way it works in the good ole USA anymore.
Exactly! The exact same box of 5.56 we can buy costs the government 2 1/2 times what we pay!!
You are correct sir. These cows could be made to taste good and eat well. As long as it is not an old bull. I guess even and old bull could be edible mixed into summer sausage with enough pork.

I find this thread very interesting for an ole Swamp Trapper from the deep south Louisiana! Where did you hang a beef for 2 weeks and not have it spoil? Down here a hi temp of <45 deg weather happens for only a few day in January or February.......... sometimes LOL.
