hey guys this may sound like a stupid question but i have alot of moly coated bullets that i want to use but have never used moly coated before, is there a downside to moly? mainly when it comes to barrel life, accuracy and cleaning ? thanks !

Back in the 90's pre internet one of the things I tried was Moly Bullets. I used commercial and even coated my own. I have a unopened box of 500 Sierra 168 Match Kings still sitting on the shelf. I pretty much load as fast as I can go and not punch primers if I can get the accuracy. For your questions....never experienced any issues in those areas.

MAJOR ISSUE FOR ME AND THIS WAS NOT EVER MENTIONED WHEN THIS NEW CRAZE HIT MY SHOOTING WORLD. 7STW/Rem 700 with 160 Moly Speer Grand Slams at 3300fps in mid 90's on its first elk hunt out of state. I carry one spare round in each pocket while hunting. I put four cartridges for the gun in my pocket with the spare when done hunting. Took us a week to figure out where the elk were. Shot a small 6x6, punched a primer, and the tiny primer disc blew back into the firing pin locking it up. Bullet sucks in this loading and I had to use my brothers rifle to kill the bull. Yep I loaded the one spare round and it had worn off enough of the Moly in my pocket over a week to over pressure and blow the primer. Solved my MOLY MADNESS immediately.

wow , what a mess that was man ! well that pretty much sums it up, I don't need to mess with these! they are factory loaded , got them in a trade so oh well no need to mess with them . now I also have some Winchester 7mmwsm accubond Ct's that say Lubalox on them its a black coating but from what I gathered this is not moly so i think i will be ok shooting them !

Yeah, those won't hurt anything. It's mainly an oxide coloring. I don't think it does anything for performance, but won't hurt anything either. Dude, why not just get regular copper coated or mono bullets and color them with sharpies if you are all into colored bullets! 😄

Lubalox is an adhered coating that is thicker and the moly was basically impact attached. It was common to run them in a vibratory cleaner with other bullets impacted against each other....some even added BB's to shorten then the time. I used the pre-curser to the Win coating on Barnes bullets in their XLC bullets....I believe it was the same stuff as Lubalox and came after the MOLY BS. Never had one issue with the XLC and used them in the same gun in the same way. I have shot the Lubalox bullets and I needed to add a little powder to get same velocity....tells me they were slicker. Never encountered any of your concerns with the XLC or Lubalox.
I use a moly liquid when breaking in a new barrel and in some guns after cleaning. It does reduce copper fouling and does not make me change powder charges to match velocity.

A few things about moly,,
It has an affinity for itself, and wipes in layers some distance down the bore. If not managed this builds to a accuracy destroying constriction that does even more damage to remove than leave..
It reduces burning temperature through latent heat of vaporization. This causes lower muzzle velocities for a given charge.

On the flip side, if well managed, it extends accurate barrel life and it greatly reduces copper fouling.
IMO, WS2 is better. Stay away from moly.

lmao no doubt ha ha , nah no thing for colored bullets just getting to the bottom of my stash due to crazy times politically and medically(corona) even though i think both of those are the same thing now days! having to load bullets i have been avoiding loading so figured i better ask the questions before screwing up my rifle !

thanks mike , im going to steer clear !

Devil, the juice isn't worth the squeeze IMO.

Can you gain more velocity with moly? Maybe.
Will it extend barrel life? No proven facts that it will.
Hard to remove from a barrel? Wasn't for me with Kroil and Butches.

Overall I didn't find it did anything special.

Sometimes you just gotta **** on the electric fence to find out.

Dude I'm with you until the last one. Watched a kid fall for that at a Jr Rodeo...have a clear vision of the location as I type. Nope, I could tell immediately I was taking the screaming bawling even with no words advice Del gave out.
