I am going to start a poll (in its own separate thread) and would like to have you guys list the cartridge candidates to be included in the separate poll.

From this existing thread, I will choose up to 10 to include in the official poll in its own thread. And then every one can vote.

So this thread is sort of like an elimination or qualifying round in the competition.....gun)

    Just my top five thoughts!

I would rate them this way. Considering that different parts of the country use/require different things from a rifle. I consider shotguns as big game fodder, but they aren't typically classed as 'cartridges', so I left the 12 and 20 guages off my list.

    1. 30-06
    2. 7mm Rem Mag
    3. 30-30
    4. 300 Win Mag
    5. 308 Win
    6. .243 Win
    7. .270 Win
    8. The weatherby's (gotta be on the list, but which one(s) ? 7mm, .300 )
    9. 300 RUM
    10. 300 WSM (if not yet, I look for it to make great strides in the next 10 years).
This list leaves off a ton of great cartridges, 25-06, 22-250, all the 338's and larger (big bears etc).

For long range big game hunting my guess would be

    300rum
    300win
    300wsm
    7stw
    338lapua
    7mmwsm
    6.5x284
.243ackly or another pretty hot 6mm
    338ultra
    7mm ultra

there may be better cartridges but these would be my top ten guess for popularity

+1, although my heart wants to put an Allen mag or two on there (338 AM, 7mm AM).
