HI, I'm in the process of prepping my cases = (Winchester) but I'm looking for suggestion on what to use based off of what I already have. The purpose is for deer hunting 100-350yd shots as accurate as possible /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.
Powder = H1000, H380, and Varget
Primer = WLR
Bullet = 130gr Hornady SST, and 130gr Sierra GameKing

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Powder = H1000, H380, and Varget
Primer = WLR
Bullet = 130gr Hornady SST, and 130gr Sierra GameKing

With reguards to your components, I have only used the bullets , cases, and primers for my .270 Win. I have used H-4831, Imr-4831, Imr-4350, IMR-3031 and H-4350, as well as a few loads using RL-19 and 22. However, by an far the most accurate load I have ever developed for my rifle was using 46.5 grs of IMR - 3031 and the Nosler 130gr bullet. As for which bullet, it really didn't matter they all shot lights out with this load generally grouping 5 shots well into 1" at 200yds. This load just hits 2800fps from my rifle and was developed for my mom to use, so recoil is nil. IT has taken deer and hogs out to 380yds, all with bang/flop results. I have worked up a couple of other loads as mentioned for specific uses, but for hunting in general this load is always a first consideration.

I just started some playing around with the 130gr Hornady this past year as I got a pile of them for a decent price. Figured they would be decent for some longer range loads for hogs. However, I never got anything that I was really happy with. Not that the bullets were the problem, just didn't have much time to mess with it. Overall, it has been found that the 4350 range of powders show a generaly better overall accuracy and are more widley used for this particuler round. This is not to say that a whole host of others cannot deliver top notch velocity and accuracy, only that that particular burn rate seems to favor this bullet and case combo.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, I have heard and read where a lot of shooters with a 270 win uses IMR 4064 and H4350. I figured I would ask here hoping that someone would have tried these powders also. I only mentioned these powders because they are what I have now on hand

Thanks,

I would use the H1000, WLR primer
Bullet = 130gr Hornady SST, and 130gr Sierra GameKing and which ever bullet that you prefer

I shoot Win. case's and 63 grains of H-1000 and Federal 210 primers with 140 grains bullets in my 270 Win and love the shot to shot consistance of H-1000 with the 130 grain bullets I am sure that you can use a grain or 2 more, but start 10% below and work up carefully

Anyone chrono any of those loads. H-1000 didn't produce enough velocity in mine to be able to call it a 270 Win i.e., 3100 FPS MV. I couldn't get to 3000....

I'd give serious consideration to a 130/135/140 gr bullet and 56gr RL-22 as a starting load and working up. I had to stop at 58.5 gr.

ALso use Non Magnum primers. My luck has been with CCI-200s

I use 150 gr. speer bullets for deer. 57.5 grs. of H-4831 or 57 grs, of rl-22. 2800 f.p.s.or so with 4831, 2860 f.p.s. with rl-22. H-1000 seems kind of slow for 130's.

Roy, I get 3140 fps out of my 270 win with the H-1000 and 140 grain bullets.
Before you call bs, just remember that it has a Krieger 29" barrel
I am very happy with the shot to shot consistence of the H-1000 in both the 300 Win Mag and 270 Win and I am also pleased with the velocity in the 270

I have been loading and shooting the 270 cal for 31 years with different bullets, powders, primers, cases etc.

Shooting the 130gr. pill, the most consistant across the board was H-4831 lit off with the WLR primers. RL-22 is good also and the burn rate is almost identical but was able to sqeek out 10-20fps out of H-4831.

Now i'm fixin to rub the fur the wrong way with some out there.

I do not hand load for this round anymore. I shoot factory /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif. I know, I know, break out the cross, Holy water and garlic.

I passed down my Sako to one of my da-nephews that my Dad have given me, And my Remmy 700 to the other da-nephew my Mom had given me. Thank GOD I didn't have a Da-neece.

Anyhow, I was without my favorite caliber so I bought me a new 270 S/S synthetic stock with a 24" pipe. Season was going to open in 5 days. New rifle never shot, no load, had to do something quick and dirty to by a little time till I worked something up. Purchased a box of Hornady light mag 130gr. sst and literally shot 1 hole group with 5 consecutive rounds at 100yds. The box states 3215 so I shot the next 5 thru the screens at 3250's, again a 1 hole group. I was pretty amazed with the velocity and acuracy but it had not proven itself on game. I'm lucky to have the East Texas grizz to test on before I use any load development on the beloved Whitetail. The factory stuff performed flawless.

I tried the Hornady factory in my wife's 243. Again same results as in my 270. I tried it in my 25-06, same results. My partner Mike / Tx ask me one day how my ole 25-06 is shooting these days and I told him to strech it out a little. He shot a 1" group at 500yd gong and said yep, looks like she still got it.

I take my hat off to Hornady, hell I can't touch it with the componets available to the public. Now I have time to devote on my 270 Allen Mag /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Using several 270's 58.0g of R#22 with the 130g bullet will shoot very small groups with several types of primers, I use Fed 210's and WLR. Also in several other rifles, liked 55.5g of IMR 4350 with the 130's, in particular the 130g SST. 60g of H4831 with a WLR produces 1/2" groups in my rifle with the 130g Hornady flat base, and all of the above loads were with Win brass.

I don't know if you can get enough powder in the case with H1000 to get the velocity that you are looking for. The case is about full of the 60g oF h4831 and h1000 is quite a bit slower burning than 4831. H1000 with the 130g may work better in an Ackley Improved version of the case.

I shot a load of 4064 with the 130's years ago on Antelope so I would not blow them up, but the velocity was very slow and the pressure peaked sooner than I would have liked. I do believe that Varget will be too fast burning for your liking.

Concerning h380...I have no idea. Try it and let us know what you find out.

Good luck!

No bs, different rifles do different things.

Mine is a 27" Lilja and w/RL-22 I stopped at 3200 w/the 130/135 & 140s. Just figured that was good enough for a Win. I can take 130 Nos BTs well over 3300 but since I gave the rifle to my son, I'll let him burn the barrel out if he wishes.....

I have a 270 AM in progress and we'll let it to the loooonnngggg rrraaannnggee shootin. Until it gets here, the 338 RUM will have to do for yotes, deer and elk. Wonder if it'll handle it.....

It just turned cold yesterday and the yotes are lookin' fur'd up. Even my lab has put on some hair. Figure its gonna be a good winter for yote snipein'

Keithcandler's first paragraph recipies is right on. I shot 55gr. of IMR-4350 with Siera's and 58gr. of H-4831 with other bullets. All seated with 10k jump. Only problem you may have is late ignition issues with IMR-4350 when it gets really cold where your at.

Later Tim

you did not mention a barrel length. The 140 and 150 BT's have a much higher BC and the best powder is IMR 7828 or R-22. I've spent lots of chrono time with the .277's and h-1000 only shines in my ackley improved 29 inch barreled gun using 169.5 bullets

Even using a tall drop tube and pouring slowly 270 win cases are kind of limited to @62 grains of powder. I never really found a use for the 130's. The additional speed of a 130 over a 140 or 150's with the their higher BC makes them all about equal speed once you get out to 300 yards or so. But the retained energy of the heavier bullet really makes the difference.

I've been a 270 man since the 70's and i have several classes of .277 rifles

Budlight you are right I left out that information. It's a 22" barreled Savage 110. below is what I found out on Hogdon's web site and where I got the idea to use the mentioned components.

I am useing Winchester case's and have no trouble getting 63 grains of H-1000 in the case and I am also getting 3140 fps with 140 grain bullets in the 270 Win with a 29" Krieger barrel
