Scope Shimming for long range

here is my question, and i thought i had already posted this .what is the best way to set a scope up so that you have maximum clicks of elevation for a long rnage shot, i have had discussions of Shimming after you almost bottom out the scope and i have jeard of special rings.Suggestions please
