Experienced elk hunters

"Color me stupid"! Until the last 25 or so years, in the terrain I hunted, often a successful "season" depended upon getting a shot off in well under 2 seconds (closer to fractions of seconds). If you weren't "hot"....may as well take up golf, or some other obscene 4 letter sport! memtb
I've always carried my rifle or shotgun or handgun Hot! Kinda thought that was they're purpose.
 
Almost all of my elk have been taken by resting my rifle on a backback or using the nearest tree as a shooting stick. I have tried bipods - but too heavy to carry around in the mountains
