I was working on the black myrtle stock yesterday and thought it needed a bit more shaping. I pointed off the back of the thumbhole. I also cut the bolt throw channel in the cheek piece. The trigger hole needed some work as well. This took most of the day however by the time I shut her down I was able to get it swiped with 220 grit.
I have a duplicator to get the shape. After that I do everything by hand. Takes forever but the satisfaction is overwhelming when you see the stock come together.

I don't think it is possible to understand the amount of time and work it takes to make a stock from a blank if you haven't done it, even just finishing a pre-carved stock is something that takes a lot of guts to start and even more to finish. I have seen some that aren't great but still admire the effort it took, some of my own efforts fall very squarely into this category too...... Those that do this work well have my complete respect for the art and the artistry that they can create from a board.

The hardest part for me is handing them off after I'm finished. I spend countless hours (at times months) filing, shaping, sanding etc. Seeing the vision you have come together. Each blank has its own character. Sometimes it takes a while before you can see the blanks potential.
