A Good Colorado Elk

We just came back from Haden hunted the 11th thru the 15th 5 of us and no Elk taken only 1 spike seen and now cows on lands that have produced for 20 years, shortened season , no cow tags or combination tags available. High winter kill and drought. our guide has 4 other areas he leases with full parties on each including resident hunters only 4 cows taken and 1 small mule deer. if possible if I were you I would try to find a better area. we herd Craig was no better. we never even saw a single rack in a truck when we left. that is pretty bad. we since read winter kill estimates were 30-50% on mature Elk and as high as 90% on calf due to deep snow. there was no snow above and Elk migration if any was not apparent. the normal herd on protect lands was around 500 normally 2,000.
I'm on the south sine of the flattops and though we didn't have the devastating winter kill the north side had it was still a lot different here too. Usually I'll have a few hundred elk on the ranch September until the rut ends. This year there were very few. Never saw a single cow during my second season cow hunt. Fortunately there were a few bulls in the rough stuff, but only a few

COBrad and Bonie, thanks!

We have cow RFW tags just north of Craig, so hopefully it pans out if they are in the winter range. I expect the pickings to be a little worse this year, but since it's private we are hoping for the best.

Here's a couple more. I was standing up against the antler in that first shot but it still looks bigger than he actually is

Love those dark antlers. Congratulations! My favorite time of the year on this site is now to read the stories and view the pics. Thanks for taking the time.
