A Good Colorado Elk

One of my best bulls. I had been watching a good 6 point for a couple weeks but 3 days after the season hadn't found him again. Was sitting unwrapping a snickers and when I looked up I thought I saw a bull across the canyon. Took a quick look through the spotter, ranged him at 687 yards and fired. 245 grain Berger EOL through the shoulders dropped him in his tracks.
Very nice bull and shot.

Great shot on a really nice bull.

It appears there are a couple of roads by your hat in your 1st picture. Were you able to drive to your shooting spot and shoot across? Congratulations, nice bull.
Yes. It's an atv trail I access from the ranch and set up on a switchback. This shot was 687 yards and shots can run to a little over 1200

Good looking harvest! Good mass on him!

Share a couple more photos please 😀. It's an interesting set of antlers so I am curious to see another angle. From the photo they look like they lay flat.

Also, what area of Colorado? No need to give up the unit or specifics, just noticing not much sign of winter. We haven't been hit with much in the state yet…

I am heading out by Craig in January with a cow tag.
We just came back from Haden hunted the 11th thru the 15th 5 of us and no Elk taken only 1 spike seen and now cows on lands that have produced for 20 years, shortened season , no cow tags or combination tags available. High winter kill and drought. our guide has 4 other areas he leases with full parties on each including resident hunters only 4 cows taken and 1 small mule deer. if possible if I were you I would try to find a better area. we herd Craig was no better. we never even saw a single rack in a truck when we left. that is pretty bad. we since read winter kill estimates were 30-50% on mature Elk and as high as 90% on calf due to deep snow. there was no snow above and Elk migration if any was not apparent. the normal herd on protect lands was around 500 normally 2,000.
