Would a 7mm08 throated for longer bullets such as the BVLD be worth it for target shooting out to 1200 yards? A friend is looking for something simple to target shoot with. What other 7mm would be better but he is trying to keep it simple.

1,200 is a long way, but you can expect the 7mm-08 to hang with other rounds in it's class. A 284 might make more sense if they reload. Even the 162 ELDX in 7mm-08 loaded long can put up some good numbers.

Looking at bullet BC's the 162gr ELD-M would work best, followed by thw 162gr ELD-X, then the Berger 168gr VLD Target.

With the newer powders you can push these around 2,800 fps, with a 26" or preferably a 28" barrel you'll get there.

My club partner shoots a 7-08 to 1000, so 1200 is do-able.
His preference is with 168's too.
I run either 168's for hunting and 180's for steel in my STW.

Cheers.
