.308 Winchester Still Has It

Check out this group I fired tonight at 100 yards with my Dad's old Remington 700 Varmint Special with Leupold 6.5-20x40 Target scope. Those 3 shots measure 0.067" center to center. Calipers pictured show 0.375 outside to outside. This old rifle and cartridge can still shoot some incredible groups. This is my personal best group I've ever shot at 100 yards!

.308 Winchester
168gr AMAX
43.6gr Varget
Remington 9 1/2 Primer
2.875 OAL
Peterson .308 Win Match brass!

I wouldn't say the 308 still has it, I would say the 308 will always have it.

It is known for being deadly accurate, reason why it is still around and will always be around

Here's the picture I promised of the Remington 700 Varmint in .308, also attached is another group I shot tonight. This rifle flat out shoots. This group was fired with some 150gr Sierra MatchKings with IMR 3031. Would you believe this was also virgin brass! My Dad wanted me to fireform some more Peterson brass so we just threw together that load haha. This group measured 0.117" center to center. Not quite as good as the one from the other day, but pretty good if I do say so myself.

Now, that's a classic with a classic scope of its day, great group.

I'll have my 308 Win for a few more years,,, but change will come in time...

Probably a 7mm-08 or One of the Three small case 6.5's...

I've shot some pretty long distances with my 32" heavy barrel rig,,, I shortened it up for some fun shooting and a bit of predator control stuff...

There will always be a place for the old school,,, same goes for the trusty Aught-Six...

Cheers from the North

That's a great group and a Beautiful Riffle!!!!

One of the most accurate rifles that I have ever owned was box stock 5R in .308. The best five shot group shooting 44 grains of 4064 and 168 AMAX was .195. I eventually shot the barrel out and rechambered to a 6.5 X 47L...happy with this choice.

Good shooting Jerry. Those rifles were some of Remington's best. I have owned two of them through the years; a 22-250 and .243. Enjoyed them both but moved on to something else.
I just saw another in a gunshop last week in great shape, in .222 Rem., on consignment for $850. I dearly would love to have that thang.

Thanks! My Dad also has the identical rifle to this one in .222 with a 12x Leupold on it. It also shoots little tiny groups too haha.
