"Bullets heavier than 200 grains are not recommended for the .300 Win. Mag. due to its short neck." I read this on a different site and would like to get your guy's opinion on it.
    Thanks,
    Nick-

I think a minimum of 180 to 200 + grain bullets are great for the .300. They tend to have a high BC.

That said, the statement made may have a lot to do with magazine constraints on factory rifles. If you go too heavy, and have mag constraints, you will have to seat deep, which takes up powder space. As far as the short neck, that is not a hinderance IMHO.

If you don't have to seat deep, then you can go heavy.

My favorite weight for the the 300 win mag are 180 -208 grain. Even the 210 Bergers will work well. The Magazine length would be the big factor like mentioned above. The 180 Nosler Accubond is an excellent choice for the 300WM. This cartridges ability/potential is wasted on anything lighter than a 180 IMO.

Only .100" bearing surface is necessary in the neck I've seen 240grn SMKs in a 300WM and it is a very under rated cartridge, actually does quite well with medium powders and heavy lead!

I find the OP interesting as I have loaded 210 Bergers in many many 300 win's. I think they are a great choice for this cartridge. Don't know why anyone would feel different.

He's right a 28" 10 twist barreled 300wm with 210 bergers has won more 1k IBS matches than anything else I can think of!

I'd shoot some 208 amax's or 210 bergers. You can even shoot the heavies slower and have great BC...

I like the 200 AB over H-1000 but I also have an awesome load with the Hornady 220 RN over H-4831. I know it is not in vouge on a site for long range hunting/shooting but I get cloverleaf groups and when I hunt moose or elk where ranges are going to be 300 yards or less it gets the call each and every time and has never let me down. So the over 200 grain short neck stuff is I would say hooey. I have had at least one 300 Win in the safe for the last 25 or 26 years and it is a fine cartridge that has reach, accuracy and recoil can be managed by most without a break with some practice.

Thanks guys, I figured it was an odd comment. I remember hearing so many of you members here talking about pushing 200 and over out of your .300WM, so I figured Id run it by you guys.

The new military round is shooting the sierra matchking 220grn. Just my thoughts. Ive heard that the 300 is made for the heavier bullets. Just my two cents

I just got some 225 hornady match bullets they sit right at max coal when set to the hip and they fit my mag just fine. they have a nice long baring surface which should help with the long throught of the win mag. cant wait to get to the range. i've loaded .5 grain increments from 77.5 to 80.5 grainsgun)
