Hunting bullet to 1000 yards, deer, antelope and elk. Which is the choice? A lot of proven data on 215 but have heard of some performance issues with 195? 195 wins ballistically for wind drift. Any help is appreciated in my decision.

I opted for the 215/300 combo simply because I can run it in a 9 or 10 twist tube.

More importantly to me, in a pinch, I can sling the ABM/Berger Ammo if I don't get a chance to roll my own or any of the available heavier bullet weight factory ammo from Nosler/Barnes/Hornady etc.

With a dedicated 195 EOL chamber and twist (1-8 IIRC), you're locked in to rolling your own with no safety net for facyory ammo per se. But that only matters if you dont have enough on hand or nothing happens to your ammo while out in the field.

Just my 2 pennies.

Just went over this debate in my own head about a week ago. When I rebarrel I'll stay with the 300 win. My reasoning also includes having the reloading components already. I will go with a 28" tube to gain a little more velocity then currently. Either one will do great but the 300's component availability is hard to overlook in my opinion.

Look at it this way...
The 28 nosler is awesome and when built right is a very very good round! even when pushed to its absolute limits and that's being done to see the chrono numbers people are showing and being done with powder that most aren't comfortable with( still a really good powder), and simply put I'm not buying them nearing 3200 or over with a 195 considering that encroaching on 7-338 lapua improved speeds,,, but it is what it is!! Now lets do it with a powder that all are comfy with and that retumbo or h1000
The 28 will run 3000-3040 in a 26 inch barrel 1-8.5 twist without shredding brass every other firing and making smiley faces on the head stamp saying (LOOK AT ME STUPID IM A MAJOR SIGN THAT YOUR DOING IT WRONG) LOL.
here's what it will look like @1000 yards using legit drop tables that ive seen in the field when i test them to and past a 1000 yards!

28 nosler 1-8.5
200 zero
195 berger
3000 fps
.755 bc
195 weight
45 deg temp
4000ft
25.03 pressure
19.4 moa elevation
3.1 moa for R to L wind @10mph
1793 ftlbs energy
2003 fps impact velocity

300 winny 1-10
200 zero
215 berger hybrid
3000 fps
BC .696
45deg
4000 ft
25.03 pressure
19.8 elevation
3.4 moa R to L wind for 10mph
impact velocity 1953 ft per second
energy 1821 ft lbs

Dam near identical and yes if you ramp the numbers in favor of the 28 it will look bad *** and yes the 28 is a bad *** round and stupid accurate but so is the 300 win. same could be done by comparing it to the 300 ultra with a 230!! but when apples to apples are compared and true drops are formulated out to and past a 1000 yards not readings from a chrono then the real numbers shine and it is what it is!

The thing I like about 7mm vs 30 Cal is that I can shoot a 162 grain ELD-X out of my 7 mag that has the same or better BC than pretty much every 30 caliber bullet under 210 grains, which means that the rifle is also not beating the ever loving crap out of me (I hate recoil). An elk is not going to know whether it got shot by a 28 Nosler or a 300 win mag at any distance.

The issues I have heard with the 195 are related to terminal performance - failure to expand etc. and guys ended up with multiple shots needed on elk and deer. Can anyone shed any light on this? I'd go 195 in a 28 nosler all day if that bullet had the killing reputation Broz established with the 215.

I'm waiting on Hornady to join the heavy for caliber party in the 7mm. They've done it with the 30 cal so it's just a matter of time. I'm very happy with the terminal performance of the ELD-X bullets.

This was a good read, I shoot a 28 nos, this is the card I use. The difference is I shoot a 175 eld-x. I thought it was an interesting comparison. Seems I would have a little bit of speed but the heavier grains hit a touch harder. I have busted rocks out to 1250 with my card so it is right on. My only confusion for me is, is my app right or is my magneto correct on muzzle velocity. Through chrono I read 3175 fps average, the app I have to adjust to 3350 to be correct with drop and drift. Not sure this adds anything to the thread, but wanted to show some more numbers

Just my 2 cents.

That aside both are phenomenal, I just think .284 is king on lr hunting unless you step up to .338, mainly because its never let me down so its what I prefer. I do about the same with less powder and lead.

I've been having the mental debate for a while now myself.

I've been a 7mm junkie for some time and was planning to build a 28 or 7-300 improved to run the 195. In reality, I think most 7's do equally well with a 180.

If you look at the numbers above, you'll see their nearly identical practically speaking as shown in the post above.

I'm currently thinking of the 300 Norma as the 30 delivers a little more mass on target. It will get 3000fps with a 220 grain pill and lapua makes brass for it.

I had a 28 Nosler and just switched to a 30/28 nosler. 4-5 grains more powder than the true 30 nosler. I will be running the 215's. My accuracy node was 3050 with the 195s. Some see 3100. The node for the 30/28 is 3100 to 3150 based on Alex Wheelers past experience. The 230 bergers at 3060. This is with H1000 and retumbo. I did shoot a bear with the 195s last year at 575. Watched it instantly go head over heals down the hill. Hardly and blood and never found it. Didn't have a spotter for hit. But almost no blood. So I can't say it was the bullet as I never found the animal. My 7mm rifle is a saum shooting 180s about 3000.

Broz ran a 7-300 and a 300. After a few animals they left the 7-300 home. I would contact him for direct comparison. If elk is always on the menu a 3 is what the bore should start with for a number. How you fill in the rest is up to you. There is no replacement for displacement. If you just found out your going next season run what you brung and enjoy. Modern brakes like beast and the rest have really evened up the major difference which is recoil. If shooting a 300 and big 7 is mitigated by a good break why settle for far less cross section. All of the sub 30 calibers are separated by single digit .000's of an inch. From 284 to 308 is like a 6.5 to a 7 or 6 to a 6.5 or a 22 to a 6mm. All are major moves with a tweener cept the 23 cal. 25cal 27 cal. In every case it is more about the bullet than the case.
One of the very reasons the 06 has had such a great ride.
