I am working up a load for my Ruger M77 .270 with 140gr sierra's. Does anyone out there have any tips or experience with this combo?

The answer to most of life's questions is either 4350 or 4831. At least so far as a 270 Win is concerned, take your pick.
The 140 Sierra is no exception.

IMR 4350 52g.
IMR 4831 54.5g.
These were not max loads when I used them alot but the Hogdon reloading data center shows a max now of 54g of IMR4831(IIR it used to be a 57g max but I could never go that far). I guess powder changes..reduce the loads and work up.
The IMR4350 load was very stable and accurate and I have a 3 shot group with the load that measured .340" at 300yards!
Musta been 3 wild flyers that happened to hit the target close to each other.

All I use is IMR4831 for my .270. Now that I hooked you guys into my thread. maybe you can help with another question. I have been trying to work up a load for the 90gr sierra varminter for this same gun. Cant get it to group. Once again im using IMR4831.

Dmaxthad,
Basic rule of life, lighter bullet = faster powder. If you're using the 4831 for the 140, you might step on down to a somewhat faster choice with the little 90 grainer. Might try the 4350 there, or even something just a tad faster. There's always 4320 and even 4064 in the IMR series, and any number of options in the same burning range among the various competitors out there.

Generally with a 270 if you are having accuracy problems go to IMR4350 and see if your problem goes away.
It would take a case full of 4831 to get pressure with a 90g bullet. In my rifles 4831 gives good velocity with reasonable accuracy(the hot loads shoot okay), 4350 is more accurate but generally not at max pressure so they are slower.
I used 4831 in max hunting loads and 4350 to shoot paper tigers.
Now there are powders like Magpro that will add 150fps onto 4831 loads.

My old trusty m77 does have a new longer barrel, But i found through days on the range with a chrono is that it like Reloader 22 and large rifle mag primers. I use winchester cases because they have more interior room for powder.
For hunting and paper I use the Seirra 140 & 150 SPBT Another good powder for the 150's is IMR 7828 SC again with mag primers like the CCI250 or Win LR mag primers.
with R-22 140's my gun can handle about 59 grains with exceptable case life. Of course work up a load.
