OAL for Win model 70 300 WM

I have a Winchester model 70 extreme weather in a 300 win mag. I'm trying to load rounds that are .020 to .070 off the lands in order to get the best accuracy. The problem is that the round is too long. The second round (on the left side) comes up against the ejector and the bolt will not catch the base because the ejector is holding it down. I have to go almost to the SAMMI spec of 3.340 overall length in order for the second round to chamber. The first and third round chambers OK because the ejector does not get in the way.
If you have the same rifle, what have you done? Just go with the 3.340 overall length, or have you ground the ejector off in order for the second round to clear??? I talked to Winchester and they said that trimming the ejector WOULD cause problems.

Depends how much work and $$ you want to put into it.

Switch to a DBM and AI mags and you'll probably have plenty of room.

My 7mm Rem Mag (that used to be a 300WM) is running smooth with an OAL of 3.466 and room to spare.

Although, I can't see how shortening the ejector would cause functioning issues, as long as it's long enough to still hit the case and eject it correctly, which would be determined by the bolt stop length.

I think you are going at this kinda backwards. I would recommend that you establish the max base-to-tip OAL to the rifling with your chosen bullet. Shoot a group at max OAL, .040 off the rifling, .080 off the rifling, and .120 off the rifling using a starting or mid-range load.

If the best OAL for your chosen bullet is too long to function through the magazine and you can't live with single loading, you have two choices:

Switch to a different profile bullet and try again. Or, have a Wyatt's mag box installed.

If the best OAL does function the way you want it to, go ahead and do the powder charge work-up and you are done!
