338-06 or AI help

Ok I am looking at building a 336-06 AI main reason I like the concept. Second I think it would be nice to have as a pig gun that i could take elk hunting. . My plan is to have a 22 inch barrel 1 in 10 twist on a savage mag contour. That being said I thought I would see what yall had to say about the round and what version of the AI would you go with. My plan is not for it to be a real long range shooter but it to be more of rifle that is easy to maneuver. As far as rang goes 400 is all i would ever ask of it. Thanks for any advise

I think I'd go for a 26" barrel, and a 24" as short as I would ever want. Probably want to check with the bullet folks on the twist rate, as some of the .338 stuff has a high B/C. (the 225 grain Speer is .48 B/C)

My goal is to be able to shoot around 2600 with a 225 grain bullet Will a 24 inch barrel be a must to do so. Here is my thought behind it. Alot of people try to build a short range rifle just to be handy and easy to use. My thought it not to have a 223 or something like that but have some power behind my every day gun basically it will be what u use the most weather hog deer or yote. So a 26 inch barrel would make the rifle not fit the need of being easy to carry. I know a 338 is not needed for yotes but hogs in my area are starting to get very thick so a handy rifle for them would be nice. I also have a elk hunt in the future so I figured it would give me a good chance to become familiar with the rifle until then.

I understand your wanting a 22" barrel. I built a 338 RCM a while back. I believe its performance is very similar to the 338-06 AI. I chose a 22" barrel and shoot the 225 Nosler Accubond. IMO RL-17 is the perfect powder for this cartridge. It should work well with either the 338-06 or the AI version.

My load: 57.5 grs RL-17/ fed 210 primers / 2750 fps.

This rilfle weighs 7 1/4 lbs. Has a 2-7 x 33 VX-II with CDS turret. Have tested it out to 500 M. Killed a cow elk at 175 yds last year. I am very happy with the decision to make this rifle.

So go ahead with your plans, I think you will like the results.

I will eventually rebarrel my long action rem 700 and was thinking about the 338-06 also. The rifle currently is a 30-06 with a short 21" barrel. I like the balance and feel of this rifle. I think I will have my new barrel length between 22-23 inches. What is the muzzle diameter on the savage mag contour? I will probably go with an 11 twist to shoot the 160-210 grain bullets personally.

a 24" barrel should squeak by on the velocity figure your seeking (standard .338-06). The Akley will be about 150fps faster, with everything perfect. I seriously doubt that you'll ever know the difference between a 26" and a 24" barrel in real world hunting
