How fast can these be pushed w/o coming apart? I was thinking a 6x284 for my next build bot now i am maybe thinking 22-243 or 22-284. It will be quite the barrel burner but that is no problem.
 
You might wanna ask Berger. They've been changing their bullets to stop blow-ups.
The original 90vlds would go little more than 3Kfps from the required 7tw, and all the energy it takes to run past that..
 
I shoot a Savage LRPV .223 7" twist, in factory class groundhog matches out to 500 meters. My load from day one has been Lapua brass, 80 gr. Berger VLD, 25.5 grs. Varget and BR 4 primers. I have won many matches with this load. That bullet never came apart.

About a month ago, I tried the 90 gr. VLD at 200 meters, and I was very impressed with the accuracy. The bullet did not come apart. The new J4 match jackets are a litle heavier to avoid blow ups. I just ordered another 600 of the 90 gr Berger VLD's; think they will be my favorite next year.
 
3300 is as fast as i have ever pushed the old bergers using a 7.5 twist barrel. They will occassionally come apart with long strings of fire. I was using them in a 22x47 lapua, i suspect the thicker jacketed bullets will hold together, but have yet to try them.
 
So , Eddybo, would build another, or step to a 6mm?

I am a minimalist at heart, so I keep asking why shoot a 115gr with a 280 BC when you can shoot a 90 with a 280 BC?
 
Just finished a 22-284 with a 28 inch one in 8 twist Brux. We are using a 80 grain berger. Have settled on about 3625 fps accuracy is aroud 1/4 inch at 100 yards. No problems with them coming apart.
My gunsmith has a 22-284 with a one in 7 twist. When he was driving the 90 gr bergers over 3750 they would come apart before they got to the target. With the twst and speed they would not stay together.
 
I would guess the 90 has a thinner jacket to get such a high b.c. A more dense material usually makes better projectiles. Less copper, more lead = heavier bullet. (I hope someone who knows more about this bullet can give some input???)
It's a shame they come apart, considering how Berger says the thick jackets of their target line have never came apart in competition. I guess you can't have have your 22 cal cake and eat it at 3800fps too.

-just an interesting note, a 90 gr VLD@3779fps would have ~ the same drift as a 230gr hybrid@3000fps, and at sea level, they both go subsonic near 1 mile. That has my gears turning.
 
It's a pretty safe prediction that they won't be coming apart in competition, because accuracy comes way before bullet shredding energies.
Actually, from an accuracy standpoint there never was an issue with VLD integrity.
And the original VLDs(hunting VLDs now) are as good as ever.
 
That 22-6mm is based of a 6mm Remington, right? I've been wondering if the longer neck prolongs barrel life, by having the worst of the pressure vortex contained in the longer, by .1", neck.

Have you done anything with these 90's? Did you ever try them with your 22-243? Let us know what you found.............I think this could be one of the best combos ever!
