I am looking to get into 1000+ yard bench rest shooting. i have done some 600yard or less but i want to go farther and i am looking at getting a new gun and scope.

i have been looking at either the savage 6.5x284 benchrest model 12 or the model 12 f class.

That depends on total preference. What do you LIKE and whats your intended usage?

If your doing benchrest, go with the Savage Target action and have the 30" 1:10 twist chambered in 300WSM. Use 210 or 215 Bergers and H4350 powder with F210M or CCI BR2 primers. I would use Norma brass, but its up to you which brass you use. This caliber and combo set the record at 1000yds last year in Williamsport at 2.8". I would definitely consider the benchrest stock. Its a very stable platform.

I can get them made with-out the adjustments as well.

for just a little more money you will have a much nicer rig, it will require you to buy a couple tools but once you have them you are able to change things whenever you want.

I call BS on skipping the factory rifle, until you shoot the barrel out. My 6.5x284 savage 12 f class was a 4-8" shooter at 1k with the factory barrel and a 12-42 nf with the np-r2 reticle, get the load right and it will treat you right for about 850 rounds as a ligth gun, just have a break installed to keep the rifle from torqing.

If you are intent on shooting in excess of 1,000yds I'd suggest moving up to at least a .30 cal in one of the super mags if not .338's.

You really need much higher BC's than are possible with the smaller diameter bullets.

I have a couple of kills over 1,000yds with 7mm's but if I were planning a rig like you are for over 1K 30 cal would be my minimum choice.

reticle - i haven't done a lot of scope shooting to know what i like yet. this be used at ranges around me 100-300 yards and when i get to travel 600-100+ yards mostly bench rest shooting.

I would like to go with a stock rig at least for a while. When if feel more comfortable in the future I don't mind doing a full upgrade then.

i decided on the 6.5x284 for 2 reasons.... they may be wrong reasons but there still reasons .... it looks like the ballistics are good on that round. very little drop over a long distance. even though i have heard there a barrel burner. next is the price to shoot. i can afford the gun and the scope but firing 338 is double the money or more.

I think your choice is a good one to get into the 1000 yard Benchrest sport. There are several guys at our club that shoot this rig. Most all go with the fine crosshairs, dot Benchrest Reticle in the Nightforce. Some shooters will have a tendency to push you into a fully customized rig and blow off the Savage factory rifle. While I have evolved into the custom rigs myself, I have to admit that the Factory Savage Benchrest can hold it's own and run with the custom rigs. It's a good rifle to get into the game with. Also, there are a lot of other non rifle equipment variables and skills that one has to master. In time you may venture into the custom world. The custom things you do will be based on your own preferences, not someone else's. 6.5x284 is a good choice of caliber. Just my opinion.

The 12 F class will do just fine for you, some people do not read to well about you shooting benchrest and they recommend the "super magnums" which will destroy a barrel quick. Last year at the IBS nations the first 8 of the top 10 winners were 6.5x284s, the record is actually .984" with a 308 Baer, second was set by Bill Shehane with a 6.5x284 imp at just over 1.5". As far as reticles the NP-R2 is nice, look it up on there site, for the money your best off to go ahead and get the 12-42, everyone I associate with at IBS matches use them. Good luck.

Nothing wrong with what you chose, I say go for it.

As far as the muzzle brake being installed, the only match I've shot in didn't allow them. I'm no expert just something to check into.

Well unless your going to add 50#s to it and shoot it in the unlimited class insyead of light gun, all IBS sanctioned 1k matches allow muzzle brakes. If you get good with one of the savages it makes some people mad because they do not like getting their *** handed to them when they are shooting a 5-10k $ custom, but most are cool and offer good advice.

And I have rebarreled plenty of savage rifles that were far from shot out due to a lack of accuracy or consistancy, call BS all you want I'm just showing the OP there are some other options than a $1200 factory rifle.
