What is the best hunting load for 270 Win.

using a 270Win Rem 700 mountain rifle topped with a nikon 4-12x40 prostaff BDC
I hunt whitetails , mule deer ,wanna hear what all you guys think.

also have a custom AR in 223 , do any of you hunt deer with the 223 if so what loads you use , or would I be better off getting a different cal. upper was thinking maybe 6.8 Rem SPC?

I load for a good buddy who has the same rifle, a Remington Model 700 Mountain rifle in 270. His load uses the 130 gr. Partition and H4831SC. IMR4350 would also be a great powder to try with this weight of bullet or a 140 gr. Partition.

I feel the 270 is just a natural with either a 130 or 140 gr. bullet and you would have to try pretty hard to find something better than a Nosler Partition or Accubond in those weights.

I really like the hornady 130gr. SST.does a great job on deer to 300yds. Took an elk last year with them also @ 85yds. We have smaller deer in the So. but I've took a good number of white tail with the AR-15 also,gun) I use hornady 60gr.223 mostly take head & neck shots inside 150yds.They would'nt be my first choice on big bucks but they work good on doe days.gun)

The 270 works just fine for elk and my friend has killed several bulls with his at distances up to 400 yards I believe.

140g Sierra HPBT Gameking for deer.

150g Partition for Elk.

4350, 4831 , RL17, H1000 powders.

+1 on the 150g partition for elk. My 270 doesn't shoot em quite as well as the 130 accubonds. But still prints 2-3 in groups at 200, which is good enough for me. As for the AR, it'll work just fine on deer, but the 270 will work WAY better, and give you better options in reguards to shot placement and the distance you can reasonably take game from. The only problem is that the 270 just isn't as much fun to shoot as the AR .

Me and my buddies shot the 165 Matrix this year and took a pile of elk and deer with them, there is no bullet that will put the smack down on elk like them!!! My buddies shoot 270 Wins and after the first elk with the 165 all of them wanted them loaded and they shot up their 130 and 140 gr bullet so we had more brass to load 165's. We're running the 165 in the 2750-2850 fps range in the 270 wins, elk shots were from 85 yards to a couple hundred with the 270 win and I took a bull at 865 with my 270 WSM.
We've taken elk with 130 gr bullets out to 500 yards but you have to be spot on, with the 165 gr bullets your in a different class and can take a shot with very high level of confidence!!!
At 6000ft elevation I'm very comfortable shooting a bull at 800yrds with the 270 win and 165 Matrix, and the WSM adds 200 yards to that.
Deer don't like the 165's at all but it is over kill and we do load 140 Bergers for those or for reduced recoil for the wives gun)

In regards to the question about taking an elk with a 270, totally possible Ive used factory winchester 150gr ballistic rounds and at 200yds I wouldnt think twice about it granted they hardly drop right there, they dont go far. All depends on shooting ability, scope, wind and elevation thoighwind affects little until past 300yds. Greatest point ill make is if youre shooting an elk past 200yds its better insurance to have a larger caliber. This is from my experience only, hope it helps!

I suppose the best hunting load depends on the game you are hunting...

My load consists of 130 gr Gameking, 58 gr H4831sc, Rem brass, CCI primer. My m70 sends them off at 3,000 fps flat. Does the trick for Kansas whitetails and coyotes.
