its time for a new barrel on my 264 sendero. I want to shoot the 140 vlds and 140 smk. i was leaning on getting a 30 in lilja with a 1-9 twist. does anybody have any suggestions or is this a good set up? thanks gun)

i just figured a 1-9 twist would shoot the 140s better is all. my stoc barrel shot the 130s good but it wouldnt shoot the 140s worth a darn

Sounds like a nice set up. Any changes would be personal preference. I would prefer the 28" barrel and a little more twist, but there isn't anything wrong with what you've got.

i feel sorta dumb now! for some reason i was thining my stoc barrel was a 1-10 twist but it is a 1-9 so it would mae since to go to a 1-8 for the heavier bullet wouldnt it? i really wanted to get irby to turn it into a 6.5 allen mag but the funds are a little tight these days so i figured id leave it the same and then not have to worry about having all these empty 264 brass and dies sitting around for no reason

It all depends on what you want to do with the rifle. If you don't mind the weight the longer the barrel the better. I have a 27 3/4" Shilen on my 264 Win because that is all the smith could get out of the 28" blank. Mine is strictly a deer hunting rifle. It has a 9 twist and I shoot the 130 gr Nosler Accubond average 3350 fps with Retumbo. Be sure and get you some Retumbo because it makes the 264 Win mag scream and mine is very accurate with it. For 140 gr and heaver bullets I would also suggest an 8" twist.

I didn't see anything dumb about your initial thought, and you posted up your thoughts to expand the possibilities. Pretty smart actually
Good Luck

yea i dont mind the weight because its already got an A-5 stock on it so its on the heavy side already. i had best luck with the retumbo as well with the 130 vlds. thanks for the info i appreciate it. im gonna go ahead and go with the 1-8

I recently built a 264 WM on a Rem 700 LA to shoot the heavier VLDs. I chose a 28" barrel and a 1:8 twist. There's no best answer. The required twist is not only a function of the bullet and velocity, but also of air density. i wanted to be able to shoot in cold, low altitude, dry air in the continental US. Only too long of twist can cause tumbling, but too fast of twist can increase group sizes and spin drift. I have no idea what's best for you.

I don't own a Lilja barrel but they have a good reputation. So do several manufactures. Use what your smith recommends. I don't believe Lilja offers re-barreling services, just barrels. Barrel length is a tradeoff of velocity, weight, stiffness, and handling. Again, there's no best answer.

Just curious, what barrel life have you gotten from your factory barrel?
