Freind has a well used 700 in 30-06 that the barrel is gone (no longer accurate).

I was playing with the idea or building a LR shooter with new barrel/stock.

What cal would I be able to do with the '06 receiver, and does this seem worth while, or should I just buy a completed rifle?

I just finished up building a 308 out of an old short action I had laying around. i am getting consistent half inch or less groups. my point is if you take your time and have the right person build it you can have a tack driver from a Remington action. with the 30-06 bold face i know you can use a 25-06 or 6.5-06 and i think a 220 swift. there are most likely more cartridges that will work but i would have to look that up. it all depends on what you want to spend. a good stock and barrel will cost about 300 each and then have someone chamber the barrel. the amount you spend will probably be about the same as a high end bull barrel but you will get better accuracy and have a better quality gun that you would if your just buying one off the shelf.

90% of my guns come from actions with worn out barrels. If you have the action blueprinted and build it right they become excellent shooters and can be built to whatever caliber you wish depending on the action length. With a Rem 700 Long action like you have you can do just about anything you wish from a .338 edge down to .17 Rem. All you need to do is change bolts or have yours opened up. Cheapest is to take the action you have and use a cartridge with the same size diameter as the 06 and build from there. Pacific tool and Die makes bolts with bolt heads that will allow you to change from small .223 case head to Magnum bolt head and allow you to build what you wish.

Hell yes its worth it if he gives it to you cheep this 150$ 20 plus year old HOWA action turned from this to this with the righ gunsmith Kevin Cram

Can you shed some more light as to what you would like to do with this LR shooter? Targets, furry critters or both (probably)?

I Have a custom 6-284 that was built out of an old '06, it allows me to seat the bullets very long & still have a repeater. Check it out....

Mainly a LR hunter is what I was thinking, but targets are a possibility. Have to see what he wants for it. He bought a Tikka T3 ultra lite in '06 to replace it.

Breaking in the barrel, the T3 shot a 3/4" group at 100 with box ammo. He is happy.

Brother there are SO many calibers you can use on that action.... heck maybe even get creative & throw a wildcat in there...

If you need to change bolt head diameters I STRONGLY suggest PTG bolts (the rifle pic I posted is a PTG), they make outstanding products & are relatively inexpensive.

So I guess next question is: What do you intend to hunt?

Deer and Elk are on the menu:D

Good man! lol

My recommendation will start with the .264 mags & go up from there (the .264 being a little on the light side). Keep in mind the 300 Winchester was designed to operate from an '06 length action.

Do you reload?

What kind of distance do you intend to "whack" these critters?

If you do reload and dont plan on shooting past 6-800 yards I would strongly recommend either a 280 Rem or straight 284 Win with a slight edge to the 284. Both have good ballistics with a great selection of high bc bullets. I built a 280 on a 700 action and really like it. Should also add 280 AI to the list.
