223 ackley bullet ???

I have a 223 ackley barrel coming in with a 1 in 9 twist. Do you guys think I can shoot 80gr bergers out of this?

Berger recommends 1-8 twist.

I don't think so, but might be worth a try if your speed is high enuf.
but lighter bullets would be better for varmints,etc.

It depends on how accurate and tight you need your groups to be.

As others stated, it's not optimal. But, you may also get lucky.

I was able to work up a load for the 130gr VLD in a 270 that shoots 1.2 MOA in a 1 in 12" barrel where they recommend 1 in 11". It's a really old rifle and I considered that fine for 100-300 yds.

There's another thread running where the guy is getting 12" groups at 100yds and it appears to be partly because his twist is too slow.

I've never experienced anything that bad due to twist. But in at least 2 other situations, I've been stuck at 2 MOA with VLDs and .5 MOA with the right bullets for the twist.

Higher velocity has never worked for me to overcome a slow twist. You can do the math. But, the twist is huge in terms of rpm as compared to adding a few hundred fps. Velocity may however help if you somehow find a sweet spot with the harmonics.

My $.02 is that a lower BC is more predictable than an understabilized bullet.

I no longer waste my time, money, or barrel life on bullets that would most likely be understabilized. ...been there, done that

Thanks for the response. That is my thread about the 12" groups in my 243. That is why I am skeptical about ordering the bergers for my 223. I found out that i had a 1 in 10 twist in the other gun when i thought it was a 1 in 9. The experience with the other gun was extremely frustrating. I have a friend who is really into rifle shooting and he didn't believe the groups I told him I was getting in the 243 until he shot the gun himself and shot a 16" group. It's not a good thing when you have to put cardboard from a tv box up inorder to get 3 shots on paper.

The answer is no. You really need a 1:8" or faster for bullets over 77 gr. Some 1:9" will handle 77s, but some won't. 80 VLDs would really be a stretch.
