How much will a new barrel cost

I have a rem 700 sa in 308 that I want to have a new barrel put on it. I've never had a gun rebarreled before so I'm curious what the best way to go about it. Should I take the old one off myself or send it in complete. And can anyone recomend a good smith for the job. I would like the new one to be chambered in 260 and a heavy contour as well. Any info would be great thanks guys.

a blank 28" or shorter will cost about $300 or so depending on who you get it from.

Wait time will vary from on the shelf to maybe 6 months.

look at www.6mmbr.com in their classifieds and they are normally there for sale at regular prices.

Look at each barrel maker and decide on which one of their contours will work for what you want and what twist. They have a chart on their sites.

DO NOT try to take it off yourself. If you are asking these questions you do not have the experience and tools to do it correctly in all probability.

Plus they will not charge to take it off. Just send/take the barrelled action to your smith.

Cost to rebarrel and crown will run approximately $200 +- a little either way.

Decide on the reamer you want to use. ie what throat length and min or max SAAMI.

Are you shooting the 130s or the 140s? that will determine your throat for example.

140s will require 8 twist and longer throat.

130s can be around 8.5 to 9 twist and shorter throat.

talk to the smith about which reamer he has and you want it no neck turn and min SAAMI probably. That may determine which barrel you get. Plus see what his wait time is for simple rebarrel and chamber.

while he is at it, I would have him use a trued recoil lug, face the receiver and lap the bolt lugs (another $150 +-)

Now, is your stock opened for that barrel contour? Maybe/Probably not, so send the stock and have it bedded ($80-150)

Several good smiths here for sure. Just call/email and ask the questions.

Thanks for the info. My stock already has enough room for a heavy barrel I don't have to worry about that. As far as taking the barrel
off I wasn't sure if that would cost extra so that's good to know.

BH is correct. Most barrel mfg. are pretty close in price for a sporter barrel. Now is the perfect time to have your action properly blueprinted and a good recoil lug added if you were considering it. With the new lug you'll probably need the recoil lug mortise opened up in the stock, with that done this would be the perfect time get the barreled action bedded or pillar bedded. As you can see it starts to snowball. Depending on what your going to be using the rifle for we can discuss some other options. I'd be happy to work with you on this. as long as you have a barrel vise with correct sleeves, action wrench and go/no go guages

I just had a M700 SA rebarreled at Hart in NY. Went from .243 to .308 with .342 neck. They did a terrific job. 26" MHV (.940) at muzzle with spiral fluting. They did all the blueprinting,etc. mentioned above plus a couple of extras. Cost a little over 1200.

You are so lucky! Put the rifle in your car and drive over to Pacnor's place. Have them rebarrel to whatever your heart's desire is. You'll probably come out a hundred fifty dollars ahead, and they do nice work. If the barrel contour you changing to is bigger you will have to open up the stock's forend for clearence, and this you can do yourself with a little elbow grease. I'd also recommend buy a Hollands recoil lug when you change the barrel. Then you will need a complete rebedding, but it's worth it.

you should be able to have Pacnor do the rebarreling job for about $450 or maybe less. They are great barrels. They also offer a barrel nut assembly like Savage uses for their Remingtons. I know three or four guys that went this way and love it. I suggest you get on Pacnor's website and see what they have to offer. They probably have more chamberings than anybody else out there.

Listen to BH.. he is right on target..if you do the work it can be a big mistake if you have no experence. find a real good gunsmith and be picky about your Barrel and your Smith.
I have one that I depend on who builds my Springfields and has been in many Rifle Magazines.
if you want the job done right, find a real good gunsmith that knows his $#!t..if not you will pay dearly. you can pack your rifle in a case and send it to another State if need be.
My Barrels that I buy, run just over $400.00. but were talking about shooting over 500 yards.
Its quality,reputation. Don't skimp on this purchase and the work.

Thanks for th. Recomendation about pacnor. They are in the same state as me but it would be far cheaped to to send it to them it's not a short trip to get to there shop for me.

Nice thing about this site is that you can see many examples of quality workmanship and the examples from hunts and targets shown by listers. IT's easy enough to do a search on your suspected smith's and see what kind of work they have done here on the sight.

Pacnor makes fantastic Barrels..you might enclude having your bolt action BLUE PRINTED also.
You wont go wrong, a good, a damned good Gun Smith would do this and the accuracy will be even better. Some would pass on encluding having this done but my Gun Smith at
Williams(Rod) I doubt he would let this pass.
Do it right the first time and you wont be unhappy.

Yeah I'm not big on going the cheap rout I've already contacted a smith I've heard nothing but great things about on this site. And as soon as I get my tax return it will be shipped to him. I will be getting it blueprinted at the same time it's pretty foolish not to IMO.
