Guys,
I'm looking to buy an all around gun that can hunt game from deer to bears in Canada. I'm only looking to own one great rifle! I'm looking at and like the Remington modle 700 in either the :
Sendero sf ii in 300 ultra mag
Or
Long range tactical in 300 win mag

Please comment and take into account I want to be able to kill something long range if needed 600 + yards! Voice ur oppionion thanks

Either one will serve you well. I had 2 Win mags and sold both. Now I own a 300 RUM and haven't looked back. My advise is to pick up some Nosler brass if you can though. Remington works and is OK but it is my opinion it needs extra case prep to take full advantage.

I was fortunate to buy a lot of virgin primed Federal cases when they were available.

If you really want one between the 2, I'd say, go RUM and use a larger bullet: 210 Berger VLD, or 200 Accubond, or even a TTSX or similar.

I'm going to go the other direction. If you want longevity out of the barrel, I would say 300WM. You will get more rounds down range with the WM than the RUM. I do agree that you should use the 210 Berger in either caliber. That is what I am using right now in my 300WSM.

Don't overlook the Savages. They are cheaper and in my experience will outshoot most stock Remingtons. It is also hard to beat the 7mm's for the ranges you are shooting.

I'm with liltank on this one!! I love to shoot a lot and a 300RUM wouldn't last a year for me. One great rifle is hard to get of the self sometimes, I would lean to the Sendero as your best chances and go with the 300 win since Rem don't seem to like short action stuff.

Go with the 300WM in a 24" barrel/ You will have enough energy to take elk out to 800 yards or more

I like all the options here. The 7mm rem mag is a beautiful round and would work for the ranges your taking about. Would be my preferred choice for the whitetail. I also love the 300. wsm and wouldn't hesitate to get one of them. Oh wait i have one :) Take a strong look at the 300. wsm

I have 2 7mm Rem Mags. Wouldn't trade either for a 300 WM.

I like my 7s and RUM. If the barrel shoots out, time for a new barrel! :D

i have a 6.5-284, a 7mm and a 300wm. i guess you can load the rum down to 300wm if you want but not vice versa. the rum uses 96 grains of powder, the WM 72. i think for deer and bears any of the above would work. you can't go wrong with sendero. you pick the caliber. put a good scope on it . adjust the trigger . you are ready.

Hey yall thanks for the Tips. So ive been hearing about the 7mm. Both the rifles i wana get come in a heavy barrel which is fluted. The Sendero comes in either a 7mm wm or wum, and 300 win and ultra. I dont know much about the shooting and or the ammo. 7mm is smaller round correct? im planning on putting a pretty decent scope so either way, accuracy is the same between the 300 and the 7mm? i know 300 packs a more punch? I dunno....

the 7mm rm or rum is plenty of power . the 300 wm and 300 rum have even more. . just wanted to sat ALL my mags have a vais brake or i would not shoot them. roninflag

Let me see if I can be more complete than the replies above.

If you have one rifle & one rifle only, it will be a compromise. There is no such thing as a great long-range rifle that is also a great brush gun and great mountain rifle. As such, you need to find a gun that works well, if not perfectly, in most places you will be hunting.

For a deer/black bear "do all" cartridge with long-range capability, I recommend you go with one of these cartridges: .270 WSM, 7mm Rem mag, 7mm WSM, .300 Win mag, or .300 WSM. Any of these will do what you want to do & none are too powerful to be shootable without a brake. (Even with these, some shooters want a brake.) Ammunition for each is readily available at a reasonable price. If the rifle you choose is available with a WSM chambering, I would choose it but the others are still very good. Each is capable of the 800 yard shot if YOU and your rifle are. Each of these will also leave massive holes if you shoot a deer at close range, but as I said, a one-gun arsenal is a compromise.

I do not recommend a RUM for most hunters, and definitely not for a 1-gun arsenal. It's simply too much gun for many hunting situations, too expensive to shoot, too much damage to animals within 300 yards, too much recoil or too loud if you use a muzzle brake and no fun to practice with. I like a RUM, and am even looking for a .338 RUM, but this is a specialty rifle for long-range hunting and nothing else.

As for rifles, assuming you are going to shoot a stock rifle like most hunters, I would strongly recommend you look at the Savage rifles. They are generally seen as the most accurate production rifles today. Tikka rifles are also known for their accuracy. Both the Savage and Tikka are among the most reasonably priced rifles. Savage offers a closable muzzle brake that is a great idea on a magnum in that this lets you use the brake for practice & turn it off for hunting so you don't have to hunt with ear plugs in.

If you go with a Remington I recommend you immediately replace the trigger. Remington is being sued over trigger defects that have some of their rifles firing when they should not. Some Remington (and Winchester) rifles shot well out of the box but many do not. Remington (and Winchester) rifles can almost always be made to shoot well, but that means dollars to a good gunsmith, how many dollars depends on the rifle & how well you want it to shoot.

thanks for all the tips boys, but i wanted to know if i get a 7mm win mag or ultra mag, will that be sufficient for a grizzly or black bear? I mean i would feel more comfortable with a 300 Win Mag ? Can anyone relate? i dont want to shoot twice or whatever one shot one kill is the motto im looking for.gun)
